INTERNATIONAL batsmen have a chequered history with Hobart in the BBL but this summer’s boom signing will enter the tournament in red hot form.
The likes of Sri Lanka superstar Kumar Sangakkara, English dynamo Alex Hales and last year’s import David Miller have all struggled to fire in their time in purple — but Hurricanes fans will be hopeful for a change in fortunes with Dawid Malan.
The world’s top ranked T20 batsman will hit Australian shores having savaged South Africa on its home soil.
An unbeaten 99 in the final match — coming off the back of 55 in game two — saw England cruise to a nine wicket victory on Tuesday and a clean sweep of the three match series.
Malan was crowned man of the series for his efforts in what will have Hurricanes faithful excited for when he joins the squad later in December.
“It was nice to get a bit of momentum at the start,” said Malan, who hit two fours and a six off the first four deliveries he faced.
“The wicket played really well.”
Malan hit 11 fours and five sixes in his 47-ball innings, with Jos Buttler facing one ball fewer and hitting three fours and five sixes in his 67 not out at Cape Town.
They shared a world record T20 international second wicket partnership of 167 off 90 balls to make South Africa’s 3-191 look insignificant with England winning with 14 balls spare.
Rassie van der Dussen (74 not out) and Faf du Plessis (52 not out) set up the host’s biggest total of the series, but the left-handed Malan was quickly into his stride when he joined Buttler after the dismissal of Jason Roy.
“Those guys played unbelievable innings, they put our bowlers under a lot of pressure,” said home captain and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, who fumbled a return from fielder Temba Bavuma when Malan, on 36, was well out of his ground.
While he is has been a dominant force in the shortest form of the game, Malan has only played one ODI for his country last May.
However English selectors will be hard pressed to overlook his irresistible form when the first of three matches begins at the same venue on Friday.
