Tasmanian Tigers opener Caleb Jewell felt an upturn in his Sheffield Shield form wasn’t far away.
Reflecting on his career-best knock of 227 runs against Western Australia on the weekend, the 26-year-old said he never stopped believing in his own ability.
“I didn’t know where my next run was coming from there for a while,” he joked.
“It was nice to finally spend a bit of time out there, I just wanted to make sure I made the most of it.
“It’s been a tough year for me so far so I wanted to make it count. I think it just clicked for me, luckily I got dropped on zero.
“That sort of made my mind up that I was going to get after them pretty aggressively. Once I got away, I was able to keep going.”
Even as he struggled for runs in the four-day format, Jewell felt his one-day form was continuing to hold him in good stead.
He said the support of captain Jordan Silk and coach Jeff Vaughan played a crucial role in his return to form.
“Speaking to Vaughny and Silky, they still had the utmost confidence in me which helped during the tough times.
“With the prospect of a final coming up, I want to make sure I’m contributing not just in the slips but with the bat.
“I think opening the batting in Sheffield Shield cricket can be difficult at times as well, you’re going to get a lot of low scores.
“In the past I probably haven’t made the most of getting to 50, 60, 70. All the openers around the country get out for low scores but when they get big ones, they make them real big.”
Jewell and the Tigers are enjoying an extended break before returning to action against Victoria in a home game on March 1.
They currently sit on top of the Shield ladder and a win against the Vics would move them a step closer to securing a home final.
