Hurricanes’ power-packed batter Chloe Tryon has more strings to her bow than just clearing the ropes

The Hobart Hurricanes are looking to build on their unbeaten start to the season, with the skipper declaring there is still plenty of room for improvement.

HOBART’S star signing Chloe Tryon set the WBBL alight in her debut innings but her captain Corinne Hall has declared the South African is more than just a sensational slugger.

Tryon blazed an unbeaten 46 from 18 deliveries against the Melbourne Stars in the Hurricanes’ season opener — crunching four boundaries and three sixes — to lift the visitors to 5-164 after they had slipped to 5-101 with 27 balls remaining.

In the second meeting between the teams on Sunday, Tryon faced the same amount of balls, finishing unconquered on 29 as she combined with the side’s other high profile recruit Nicola Carey (60 not out) to guide the team to a five-wicket win and a perfect weekend.

Hall said while the first game fireworks were a highlight, it was Tryon’s composed innings in the run chase in the second which showed the experienced international was armed with several strings to her bow.

“She is highly regarded in women’s international cricket as someone who is a real clean, powerful striker of the ball,” Hall said.

“We have had a lot of very similar players down the middle order of our team in previous years, so having her as a bit of an X-factor in there to finish off games is a very handy tool for us as a team.

“I think the pleasing thing with Chloe is she is not just a hitter, she is quite a smart cricketer too and she played a significant role in the second game.

“She bide her time and played some good cricket shots and when the time came to hit the accelerator she did that.

“There is more to Chloe than just clearing boundaries.”

The Hurricanes square off against the Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat at Allan Border Field this weekend, looking to build on the early momentum they seized in Melbourne.

Hall said despite matching last season’s number of wins already, there was plenty of room for improvement.

“Any time you enter a competition like this you want to get on the front foot and get a couple of wins under the belt as quickly as you can.

“For us, especially being a new group, it was nice to gel together that quickly and have a couple of really solid performances.

“The best part is we haven’t hit our straps, we grinded out those games a little bit and there are some areas we want to improve on as well.”
