Star duo give Hurricanes perfect start to the WBBL season

The Hurricanes could only muster two wins for all of last season, but after the first weekend the new look side has already matched this victory total.

AUSTRALIAN all-rounder Nicola Carey might be the prized recruit, but it is big hitting South African Chloe Tryon that has tongues wagging as the Hurricanes made a perfect start to its WBBL campaign.

Carey’ all-round brilliance and Tryon’s brutal power helped the Hobart Hurricanes complete a weekend clean sweep of the Melbourne Stars with a five-wicket win at CitiPower Centre.

Carey said Tryon had made her job so much easier.

“I can tell she hits the ball a bloody long way, which is so nice to see,” Carey said.

“She’s done it in both games now, she gets going right from the first ball and to clear the ropes like she does, she hits the ball very hard and it definitely makes life easier at the other end.

“It is really nice to watch as well.

“I thought all the girls did a really good job over both games this weekend and we’ll certainly take this start.”

Having only won two games all last season on way to the last spot, the Hurricanes have already matched this victory tally after the first weekend.

After downing the Stars by 20 runs in the Saturday’s first half of the double-header, the Hurricanes were in a spot of bother when they slumped to 5-73 with the asking rate climbing in pursuit of the home side’s 7-136. But ex-Sydney Thunder superstar Carey proved simply too good, thumping an unbeaten 60 to help steer them home with nine deliveries to spare.

She had tremendous support from big-hitting South African Chloe Tryon who has yet to be dismissed in the competition, following her unbeaten 46 from 18 balls on Saturday with a quickfire 29 not out off 18 balls, including a towering six over mid- wicket.

The pair put on 64 unconquered off 37 balls for the sixth wicket to turn the tricky chase into a relative cake walk.

Carey had earlier done her job with the ball, snaring 2-27, while Belinda Vakarewa picked up 2-27.

Despite arriving with great fanfare, Carey said he wasn’t feeling the pressure of expectations externally anyway.

“I don’t think so, there was certainly no pressure from our group on me.

“The only pressure is the expectations I have on myself.

“Coming into a new team you want to get off to a good start and it is nice to contribute early and hopefully set myself and the team up for the rest of the season.”
