Former Tigers star Michael Di Venuto is heading back to Blundstone Arena to don the purple for BBL|10

He is a Tigers legend who has just about done it all in cricket and now he’ll be teaming up with the Hurricanes for the BBL|10 campaign.

THE Hurricanes are unable to sign anyone on the field yet, but they have landed a big fish off it.

Although yet to officially sign, it is understood former Australian batting coach and Surrey championship winning coach Michael Di Venuto will be in purple this summer after agreeing to join the coaching staff under long-time close friend and former teammate Adam Griffith.

There are few with his coaching pedigree in Australia.

After his role as Australian batting coach under Mickey Arthur – which included a stint as national T20 coach and who Steve Smith credits for his rise to stardom – Di Venuto took over the reins at The Oval in 2016 where he led Surrey to its first county championship in 16 years in 2018.

He was contracted at Surrey until the end of the 2021 season but a mutual decision was made to part ways earlier this year after COVID-19 struck and Di Venuto was stranded in Tasmania.

QUICK BACK UP NO CONCERN FOR HURRICANES

During his time at Surrey he is credited with lifting players Sam and Tom Curran, Ollie Pope, Rory Burns and Ben Foakes into England teams.

The 46-year-old, Tasmania’s second-highest Sheffield Shield run-scorer, was a Strikers assistant coach during last summer’s BBL.

There is an embargo on player signings across the BBL while Cricket Australia looks to bring in an imports draft for the upcoming summer.

A decision on a player draft is expected in the next 10 days.
