D’Arcy Short starred with the ball, but now he’s ready to fire with bat as Hurricanes chase finals dream

Unusually, D’Arcy Short missed out with the bat but the master blaster is ready to fire the Hurricanes into the finals against the Strikers in Adelaide.

BIG Bash run machine D’Arcy Short has declared he is more motivated than ever to reignite his dominant opening partnership with Matthew Wade after a first up failure Friday night.

Last season the dynamic duo lit up the BBL – highlighted by an unbeaten 158-run stand which handed the Adelaide Strikers a 10 wicket defeat – but overlapping international duties has seen one absent from Hobart’s line-up this tournament.

Their first match together lasted just three balls against the Sydney Thunder, when Short was bowled by Arjun Nair for a second ball duck in the opening over of the contest at Blundstone Arena.

And while he bounced back with the ball to claim his first five wicket haul (5-21) in any format, Short is itching to return to his dominant best with the blade when the Hurricanes fight for their finals survival against the Strikers tonight.

“We didn’t fire together tonight so I guess there is a bit more on that last game,” Short said after spearing Hobart to a momentum changing thumping over the Thunder.

“We haven’t batted together all year and it would be good to get a partnership out in the middle on Sunday and get us off to a good start or chase a good score.

“All we can do is go out there and try and win the game … if it all finds into line then hopefully we can take that momentum into the finals.”

Short, who was recalled to the national one day team after an injury to Sean Abbott, left for India after scoring an unbeaten century against the Perth Scorchers.

However after sitting on the sidelines for Australia’s brief three match series he showed some signs of rust on his return to the BBL.

He also revealed his frustrations at watching the Hurricanes season slip away while he was overseas.

“I felt like I was out of it a little bit when I came in today but it was a great experience going over there and being part of the group.

“It was such a good vibe, I learned a lot while I was over there batting in the nets, it is always good to be around the group and in contention to play for Australia.

“I found out I am really bad at watching my team play if I’m not there though, I was quite frustrated most games.

“It was good to contribute in the end, I was frustrated with the way I got out at the start and just wanted to contribute as much as I could in the field and turns out it was with my bowling.”
