Clarence put the Tigers to the sword in their SFL Premier League match at the Twin Ovals on Saturday and Roos coach Grant Fagan says his teenage sensations played their part in boosting the team to its first win of the season.
The Tigers led in the first quarter and looked likely to challenge hard for their first win, after going down in the opening round to North Hobart at North Hobart Oval.
But the Roos, also beaten in the first round by the Bombers at Lauderdale Oval, took control in the second.
Despite dominating time in its front half, Clarence only managed 1.7 until half-way through the quarter.
Daniel Cooney kicked his first goal and that started a ruin for the Roos, who kicked thee more through Josh Green, Max Mapley and James Glover, and despite a late major by Connor Salter for the Tigers, the visitors led 40-32 at the main break.
Clarence was just as effective in the second half, running out 14.19 (103) to 11.8 (74) winner.
“We kept our defensive standards up really well, and our tackles and pressure acts through the game were better than last week, which created a lot of scoring shots for us,” Fagan said.
It was the response Fagan wanted after its 17-point loss to Lauderdale.
“This week’s performance was similar to last week – we competed really hard last week but we just didn’t score enough when we kicked with the wind in the first quarter,” Fagan said.
“The good thing about today we was improved on all of the measurements and areas we have, and we are all working toward getting better all the time.”
Winning on the road is a big tick.
“It’s important to win games, full stop,” Fagan said.
“We’ve got a few injuries at the moment so to win games away from home with this terrific group of young guys is really important to our season.”
Next week Clarence faces North Hobart, which retained top spot on the ladder with its win over Glenorchy at KGV, while Lauderdale also made it back-to-back wins with its victory over Brighton at Lauderdale Oval.
