The Northern Hawks are turning to positive affirmation as they look to navigate a challenge foreign to players involved in their TNL dynasty.
The Hawks have won the past three titles and lost just one game over that period – the 2023 semi-final to cross-town rivals, the Cavaliers – before recovering to win the grand final.
After losing key players over the off season, including six-time league MVP Ash Mawer and 2023 grand final player of the match Ellie Marshall, the Hawks (5-3) are third on the table after back-to-back defeats to Kingston and Cripps Waratah.
The Hawks return to action following a three-week competition hiatus with their clash against Karana set to be streamed live and exclusive on KommunityTV.
Both the U19s and Opens matches will be available from 4pm.
“We’ve been trying to focus on the things we do well,” Hawks coach Cameron Martin said.
“I reckon we can get bogged down in the things we haven’t done over the last couple of games, but we’re bringing our focus back to that positivity.
“It’s about reminding us there’s a lot of things we’re doing really well in matches, and try and focus on those things rather than the things we’re letting ourselves down in.
“Defensively we’re still turning over a whole lot of ball, which is fantastic for us, and that’s all the way through the court.”
Some of the squad are accustomed to winning most games comfortably, and Martin said they’re looking forward to the challenge of being tested.
“It’s something the Hawks opens team hasn’t had to do for a number of years, they’ve been very good and now the competition is evening itself out a bit,” he said.
“It gives girls an opportunity to get a different string to their bow, and problem solve as they go.
“It’s great to see really competitive netball in Tasmania. The last few years you can buy into the narrative of the big two or three, now you’ve got five teams vying for top four positions which is fantastic.
Martin said they won’t be complacent against the Flames, who will be desperate to get a first win.
“We’re definitely not taking Karana lightly at all. They’ve got some really solid players and consistent performers,” Martin said.
“For us it’s a chance to get back to the netball we want to be playing. The break gives us a chance to reset and work on a few things, but more than anything letting the girls have a couple of weekends off.
“The last couple of games haven’t been anywhere near what we’re looking to put out there. “There’s a lot of things as a group we haven’t accepted in our performances. We’re definitely not writing those games off, but a longer season gives us a chance to keep growing.”
The Hawks will wear special dresses over the next few rounds to raise awareness for Mates 4 Mates, who help veterans and families find the support they need to reconnect and recover.
The club supports a charity each year, with the dresses to also be auctioned off.
