The Eels had an electric start to the match at New Era Stadium with hooker Ashlee Pottinger scurrying over two minutes in.

The home side ran over for their second try six minutes later through halfback Rosemarie Beckett.

The four-pointer marked a great return to the field for the young playmaker who missed the opening day defeat to Roosters’ Indigenous Academy due to Covid.

Despite trailing 12-0 at the break, the Dogs ground their way back into the match through an early second-half try to winger Bree Stone.

No. 17 Afeni Tabuai-Salee made an impact off the bench to score Canterbury-Bankstown’s second, but the visitor’s goal-kicking was wayward leaving them trailing 12-8 with 17 minutes to play.

Eels backrower Tahleisha Maeva edged Parramatta further ahead with a little over 10 minutes remaining, but the Dogs kept trying with Stone nabbing a second try to make for a nervy final few minutes for the hosts.

In the end, Parramatta held out with the perfect goal-kicking over Alysha Bell the difference between the two sides with the Eels wingers converting three from three.

Parramatta winning 18-12.

MATCH PREVIEW

She fought Covid and now she’s ready to battle the Bulldogs – Parramatta Eels halfback Rosemarie Beckett refuses to let anything hold her back ahead of her debut in the blue and gold.

The premiership-winning No.7 takes on Canterbury in a match which will be exclusively live streamed on The Daily Telegraph website at 10.30am on Saturday.

It was a delayed start to the season for the rising star who was brought unstuck after she contracted Covid a week out from the season kick-off last weekend.

Beckett was sidelined from training for a fortnight, but refused to use it as an excuse after she finally hit her straps in her first training run on Tuesday.

“My second and my third day of Covid I was really sick but the second week I just trained at the park on my own while I recovered,” Beckett told The Daily Telegraph.

“It was a shame to miss last week but I’m feeling good, I’m excited and ready to go.”

After winning a grand final with Dragons last season, the Year 12 SEDA College Student will don new colours this weekend, a move made easy now with Parramatta’s inaugural NRLW side.

“I moved because I think Parra has a great pathway going to the NRLW competition and they’re more local,” Beckett said.

“I played league with the boys until I was 13 but then I stopped and went back to netball because I didn’t know there was girls footy.

“In under-16s I went back to footy and I just love everything about it. I love the girls, the contact, the competition, it’s just really fun. Now my dream is to make the Parra NRLW team.”

Hailing from Bligh Park and Penrith Brothers junior rugby league, Beckett said she looks up to two players in the NRLW and NRL.

“Jess Sergis is definitely someone I look up to because of her efforts on the field,” she said. “And Johnathan Thurston is another person I look up to as a halfback.

“I love playing halfback because I can lead on the field. I can help with the structure of the game and change where we’re heading.”

Eels Tarsha Gale head coach Ryan Walker said after going down to the Roosters 22-10 in round one, the focus this week has been on attack ahead of Saturday’s local derby against the Bulldogs, and Beckett will be “a big help”.

“The Bulldogs are coming off a win against Souths so they’ll have a bit of confidence but the main thing for us this week will be holding on to the ball,” Walker said.

“I think our completion rate was at 56 per cent against the Roosters and that’s where we didn’t win the second half so, if we hold on to the ball against the Bulldogs, we’ll be pretty confident.

“Having Rosemarie back will be a big help also. She’s come to Parra wanting an opportunity in the halves and she’s trained well all pre-season and was really good in our trial game before she got Covid.

“After her first training run on Tuesday, she’s looking really good for this weekend.”

The Bulldogs-Eels Tarsha Gale Cup match will be live streamed exclusively on The Daily Telegraph website, kicking off at 10.30am Saturday.
