The Bulldogs have strung together back-to-back wins to kick off the SG Ball Cup season, downing the Eels by eight points in Cabramatta.

Canterbury-Bankstown’s big boppers got the ball rolling with a couple of tries inside the first 11 minutes.

Prop forward Watisoni Bogiso was the first to score with five minutes played with his back rower teammate William Tuitupou finding the try line soon after.

Bulldogs’ Jonathan Sua scored just before half time with the winger converting his own try to take his side into the sheds with an 18-0 lead.

New Era Stadium copped a half-time dredging which saw plenty of errors come into the game in the second half.

Parramatta scrambled over for a couple of tries in the final 10 minutes through Larry Muagututia and Tutonu Junior Wright, but it wouldn’t be enough with the Bulldogs winning 20-12.

“We were really good at the start,” Bulldogs coach Mitch Lewis told The Daily Telegraph after the match.

“We didn’t finish last week the way we wanted to so we wanted to have a fast start here.

“It was a really weird game. It started off really sunny, then it was overcast, but really muggy and then it bucketed rain in the second half. Lots of errors which was poor from us.

“I thought we had two standouts in Josese Lanyon who held our middle together in the no. 13 and Watisoni Bogiso in the front row really laid a platform for us.”

Canterbury-Bankstown will take on the unbeaten Balmain at Belmore in round three, while Parramatta will look to play the Western Suburbs in Camden.

The Bulldogs match against the Tigers will be live streamed exclusively on The Daily Telegraph website.

The live stream is a part of a season-long deal to bring you the match of the round in each junior grade.

MATCH PREVIEW

A 40-20, a try and two competition points made for a fantastic start to the season for Bulldogs’ SG Ball Cup captain Joey O’Neill.

But the 19-year-old halfback is hungry for more.

The Padstow prospect is determined to make it two on the trot for the Bulldogs as the side clashes with arch rivals Parramatta at New Era Stadium.

O’Neill, who spearheaded Westsfields Sports High in the NRL Schoolboy Cup for three seasons, emulated the exploits of many of the same champion halfbacks in the backyard as a kid as most other players.

But there is one rarely remembered premiership winner who has played a major part in shaping the young playmaker.

“I look at the likes of (Luke) Keary, (Johnathan) Thurston and Nathan Cleary,” he said.

“I have also been able to spend some time with Brent Sherwin, he played in the grand final (for the Bulldogs) in 2004.

“He comes out every now and then to see how we’re going and he’s been able to really help me with my kicking technique.”

Despite his tender age, O’Neill already has plenty of runs on the board after leading the Bulldogs Harold Mats side to the grand final in 2019.

The Berala Bears junior was handed the opportunity by current SG Ball Cup coach Mitch Lewis, who said the decision to hand him the captaincy in 2022 was a simple one to make.

“He is a calm head,” Lewis said.

“The boys love him and I have coached him before so there’s a lot of trust there.

“He was quite a shy kid when I first met him. He can still be quiet off the field, but he’s vocal at training and during games. He tries to lead through his actions more than his words.

“He’s a really mature kid, very respectful, great manners, good morals – he’s the perfect captain.”

O’Neill has a solid running game, helping by being quick off the mark, but he’s also said it’s important to build combinations with teammates like halves partner Iverson Matai.

“I used to just run the ball and I still love running it,” he said.

“I try to know the strengths of the players outside me and use their skills to score tries.

“Iverson and I played Harold Matthews together. We have some good combinations, but we haven’t played much since (because of Covid) so it’s always fun playing with him.”
