Star Hobart Chargers import Kathleen Scheer has landed back in her “second home” ahead of the 2020 NBL1 season.

STAR Hobart Chargers import Kathleen Scheer is ready to lead her side by example as she returns to her “second home” for the 2020 NBL1 campaign­.

“I want to be a leader — now I’m older, and I’m an import, I’ve been around the core of this group a long time. I need to step up and lead this team as best I can,” Scheer, 30, said yesterday.

Scheer’s energy levels were on display, clearly revved up to be back in Hobart even after a four-legged flight from the US.

“I’m really excited. I’m so pumped. I missed everything about Hobart. Everyone here has always made me feel like this is home,” said Scheer, who played at the famed Duke University in America.

“For me this season it’s being a really good leader, stepping up, being dominant on the boards, scoring, doing those little things like boxing out and going after loose balls, always bringing a lot of energy.

“I feel like that’s what my game has always been focused around — energy, one-percenters and even when on the bench waving my towel and supporting my teammates.”

Scheer spent the off-season working out in her local high school gym and hasn’t played in any other leagues since taking Nunawading to the brink of an NBL1 title last season while the Chargers were in recess.

While she had nothing but good things to say about the Spectres program, she’s glad to be back in familiar territory.

Coach Mark Nash could barely wipe the smile off his face welcoming back his star import at Hobart Airport yesterday. He said the Chargers targeted Scheer from the get-go and the coach was rapt to have his foundation block in place for a pre-season.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have her back. She’s a player you can build a team around,” Nash said. “She’s spent seven years in SEABL and NBL1, and been a perennial all-star.”

Scheer joins exciting 18-year-old Shyla Heal, daughter of former NBA and Boomers great Shane, who joins Hobart from Bendigo in the WNBL.

The Chargers tip off their season with a Victorian road trip on April 18-19.
