THE signing of American-born forward Kathleen Scheer is like a family member coming home, says Hobart Chargers women’s coach Mark Nash.
Scheer is back with the Chargers after playing the last NBL1 season with Nanuwading Spectres, which fell one game short of a grand final.
She joins exciting 18-year-old Shyla Heal, daughter of former NBA and Boomers great Shane, who joins Hobart from Bendigo in the WNBL.
Nash was delighted to have his senior impact player “home”.
“It’s a huge signing for our club,” Nash said.
“Kathleen has dominated this league over the past seven years and it’s just great to have her back in Hobart for 2020.
“As soon as the Hobart Chargers were back in the NBL1 competition and I was appointed as coach, Kathleen was the first player our club was looking to bring back to Hobart.
“We all know how she dominates on court and she has been a perennial All-Star in the league.
“But she is also so well-loved in the community, whether that is school visits or local clubs and just to see the young girls and boys flock around Kathleen after a game says she’s a role model and positive influence on and off the court.”
Nash’s goal for the Chargers is two-pronged.
“We are looking to go deep into the play-offs and compete for a title,” he said.
“Off the court as well we are looking to be a great community role model.
“Women’s sport is booming at the moment and we feel we’ve got the right players with Kathleen and bringing Shyla Heal in, who is having an outstanding season with Bendigo Spirit, and Sharna Thompson as well.”
