Australian track and field 2022: Jasmin Guthrie, Mitch Lightfoot, Erin Shaw on world U20 team

A pair of teen speedsters have secured spots at the world under 20 champs while other hot shots are chasing success in a multitude of events at the Australian track and field titles in Sydney

Just about every time Jasmin Guthrie has hit the track this season she has hit a PB.

And it was no different on day three of the Australian track and field athletics championship in Sydney on Monday.

But this time the reward for her constant improvement is something she has been dreaming about – a spot of the Australian under 23 team to compete at the world championships in Colombia later this year.

“It’s such a relief,'' Guthrie said of her win in the under 20 400m event at the nationals.

“I’m just so happy and it’s a PB.’’

The Sydney speedster believes she can continue to improve in her pet event.

“I still think I can go quicker,’’ she said.

MITCHELL LIGHTFOOT BOOKS BERTH TO WORLD TITLES

Maitland’s Mitchell Lightfoot had a race he considers “poor’’ but it was still good enough to secure him an U20 hurdles crown and an automatic selection into the Australian team for the world under 20 championships in August.

“It's mind-blowing,’’ said the delighted Lightfoot, who finished school last year and has spent the last few months working overtime to secure the spot on the Australian team heading to Colombia.

“I am very happy. This shows how hard work pays off.’’

Lightfoot, who is working part-time in a shoe shop, said he has nothing but respect for his rivals in the race and who have pushed him throughout the season.

FROM SOCCER TO AUSTRALIAN ATHLETICS CHAMPION FOR JORDAN MOORE

Jordan Moore dared to dream she could win an Australian titles and that’s what she did on day three.

The Caringbah teenager, who gave up soccer after five years to concentrate on running, claimed a gold medal in the highly competitive U16 hurdles race with a personal best.

“It’s the first time I have broken 13,’’ the elated 15-year-old said after the race.

TAMMIN LAMPRET HURDLES TO GOLD

There was one race Caringbah teen Tammin Lampret particularly wanted to win at the Australian championships and she did.

Lampret, who won an hurdles crown last year, claimed the U15 title in a thrilling race.

“I was always after this one,’’ said the 14-year-old.

“This was the one I wanted to defend.’’

‘BEST RACE OF MY LIFE’ – AUSTRALIAN MEDAL FOR WOL ALBINO

It was hard to find a young athlete more excited for an Australian championships medal than Wol Albino.

Albino picked up a stellar bronze in the 400m for U15s on Monday.

“That was the best race of my life,’’ said the 13-year-old from Hornsby who attends St Leo’s.

“I was fourth last year so this is my first medal.’’

Queenslander Seth Kennedy won in 51.12 from Victorian Callum Bott in 51.98 with Albino recording a 52.51.

ERIN SHAW STAMPS TICKET TO WORLDS

A year after finishing second at the NSW championships Erin Shaw has an Australian crown and a ticket stamped to the world under 20 athletics championships.

The Sydney schoolgirl produced yet another world qualifying time in the high jump on her way to winning the U20 event.

It’s a victory which will send the high-flying teen from Frenchs Forest to the world junior champs in Colombia in August.

The towering young gun, who attends Roseville College and also plays basketball and touch football, secured an automatic selection to Colombia with her win.

She cleared 1.78m to finish ahead of Sophie Lillicrap from Queensland with a 1.74m.

DELTA AMIDZOVSKI ADDS TO HER MEDAL HAUL

After winning the U20 100m hurdles on Sunday, Delta Amidzovski added a second gold with her win as part of the NSW 4x109m U20 relay team in 46.84.

Amidzovski joined forces with Eliza Da Silva, Jessica Wardrobe and Georgia Munro for the win.

IVY BOOTHROYD WINS CROWN

Another great performance late on Sunday was the U16 400m win by Ivy Boothroyd.

Boothroyd won in 55.08 to finish ahead of Charlotte McAuliffe and Sienna Kurdian 56.12

BILLY BLAIR BACK IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE

Hunters Hill teenager Billy Blair played a key role in NSW winning the U16 men’s 4x100m relay.

NSW ran a 42.44 (McDonald, John 07 2) Hall, Dylan 07, 3) Roberti, Joseph 07 4) Blair, Billy 07) to beat Queensland 43.86 (1) Dine, Angus 08 2) Byers, Blake 07 3) Volker, Joe 07 4) Gout, Gout 07 3 VIC 44.54.
