DREW Petrie has no problems kicking goals but ask him to call Arnold Schwarzenegger and sign him up to a North Melbourne membership and he goes to water.
The experienced forward was among a trio of Roos caught in the club media department’s latest sting with help from celebrity impersonator Ben Price.
The club’s membership drive was the ideal setting with Petrie, Michael Firrito and second-year prospect Sam Durdin asked to call and sign up celebrities including Schwarzenegger, John Farnham and Bruce McAvaney.
Enter Price, sitting in a room within the club’s Arden St headquarters, armed with a mobile phone and his faultless impersonations at the ready.
Petrie is first cab off the rank in the video posted first on NMFC.com.au after a “good friend of the footy club” put him in touch with “Arnold Schwarzenegger’s manager”.
Petrie concedes “it’s a long shot” but the 293-game forward is game to try his luck.
The phone rings and it doesn’t take long for stage fright to set in as Schwarzenegger’s brash American manager hands the phone to the Hollywood megastar.
“Arnold it’s Drew my name is ...” the panic-stricken forward stumbling over his words says.
“I play footy for the North Melbourne Football Club, I play Aussie rules have you seen the game at all before?”
Using a near-faultless Austrian accent “Arnie” aka Price has Petrie eating from his hands during the call in which he agrees to sign up only if the Roo shouts “I’ll be back” and “Get to the chopper!”.
The real Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Melbourne this weekend to attend the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Albert Park but it’s unclear — and highly unlikely — he has signed any Kangaroos membership papers.
Firrito had the pleasure of talking to a jovial ‘Farnham’ while Durdin was left speechless by ‘McAvaney’s’ stats-heavy “special” knowledge of his game.
North Melbourne’s media team led by general manager of pranks Heath O’Loughlin has form in this department and history says nobody is safe.
O’Loughlin’s victims include Roos champion Brent Harvey as well as young guns Shaun Atley and Sam Wright.
