KFC SuperCoach Round 3 rage trades: Patrick Dangerfield’s poor run at GMHBA Stadium a worry

He’s in more than 57 per cent of KFC SuperCoach teams. But after a score of eight in Round 3 due to concussion, do coaches have no choice but to trade Lachie Whitfield?

Round 3 started with an upset on the field, then we had a game postponed and saw some big names out.

It all had KFC Supercoaches wishing the five trades from Round 2 had been held over a week.

These are the big guns who disappointed and players you should be trying to move on ahead of Round 4.

BOOT HIM

Patrick Dangerfield $563,500 Mid – 75pts

Just two weeks ago, we were all scrambling to try and get Dangerfield with the great run of games at GMHBA Stadium Geelong had.

But with scores of 101 and 75 in the last two weeks he hasn’t repaying the faith.

He is now under $600k and losing money fast.

In any ordinary year we would hold him, but even then our resolve would be tested with these low scores by his lofty standards.

He has Melbourne at the MCG and then Gold Coast at GMHBA after that.

He should score well in those games, but then we thought the same about his games against Hawthorn and Carlton.

Zac Williams $517,300 Def – 55 pts

GWS defender Williams was a popular choice in last year but missed Round 1 this season.

His second and third round haven’t been what we had hoped.

He only managed 55 points this week and at his price we can’t afford to hold him.

He has dropped in value this week and with a new break even of 158 he will drop further.

Cut your losses and trade him out.

Marcus Bontempelli is yet to score 100 in three games this season.

Marcus Bontempelli $560,900 Mid – 97 pts

The Bont hasn’t made it to 100 points yet in any of the three games the Dogs have played and that will be a huge concern for his owners.

Many traded him out after Round 1 and the COVID-19 shutdown.

With his break even now sitting at 129 he looks set to plummet in value again which is a big worry.

Many coaches will look to trade him out and then trade him back in later in the year when his price bottoms out at what could be close to $500,000.

Shaun Higgins $509,700 Mid – 61 pts

After a reasonable start to the year the Kangaroos midfielder’s score of 61 this week will have hurt owners and will cause his price to drop.

His value will drop again next week thanks to a high BE.

Kade Simpson $418,100 Def – 58 pts

Blues veteran Simpson hasn’t scored more than 82 this season and is losing value fast.

With co-captain Sam Docherty back his role has diminished and I can’t see his scoring getting him close to being one of the top-six defenders at the end of the season.

Rowan Marshall started as a forward on Saturday for St Kilda against Collingwood.
Rowan Marshall started as a forward on Saturday for St Kilda against Collingwood.

Rowan Marshall $532,500 Ruc – 81 pts

Not a great score from Marshall, but the bigger concern for owners is that Paddy Ryder seems to be adopting the No. 1 ruck role. He is taking the opening centre bounces and this is pushing Marshall up forward into the role he had prior to 2019. Time to move him to a stand alone ruckman.

Elliot Yeo $523,200 Mid – 71 pts

Yeo didn’t have a big night against the his old team Brisbane and some of this could be due to a shoulder complaint.

He spent a lot of the three-quarter-time break getting some work on a troublesome joint and he looked to be in a lot of pain.

Keep an eye on him as his spot may not be certain for next week. Despite this he has now had two low scoring games in a row so you may want to move him on anyway.

On notice

Stephen Coniglio $554,200 Mid – 87 pts

Coniglio has made a good start to the season with a couple of scores above 110, but an 87 this week without Kelly, Greene and Whitfield for most of the match is a concern.

There should have been plenty of possessions for him to get points from.

Give him another week but if we get another of these you may need to trade.

Connor Rozee $485,400 Fwd – 30 pts

Rozee had two huge games to start the season but was Port’s lowest scorer this week. Perhaps it was the wet conditions that didn’t suit as I didn’t notice any tag on him but if you brought him in you may want to make sure this isn’t an ongoing trend. His break even has now risen to 102. Not impossible but not ideal

Injury watch

Lachie Whitfield $537,500 Fwd – 8 pts

Whitfield left the field at quarter time and didn’t return after a big head knock in the first quarter. This has seen his BE jump to 202 and he is no certainty to front up in Round 4 due to concussion. You may want to trade him and use those funds elsewhere before he drops dramatically in price.

Sam Sturt $152,200 Fwd – 11 pts

Sturt was heavily traded in as he approached his second game but an ankle injury forced him from the ground. When he tried to return he only lasted one kick before calling it a night. He still has a negative break even so don’t despair just yet.

Tiger Jayden Short proved he can score well with Bachar Houli in the team in Round 3.

Buy Him

Lachie Neale $737,600 Mid – 166 pts

I think we all know by now that Neale is the one midfield you must get and he has had an amazing start to the season. The problem is that his price is fast becoming out of reach, so you may need to look at waiting for his price to fall a little before grabbing him. If you have the cash you may want should jump aboard with all these home games he’s enjoying early in the season.

Nat Fyfe $674,600 Mid – 166 pts

We can’t mention Neale without mentioning Fyfe. He has also been sensational this season and another great performance in a losing side again this week. He finished the night with 17 contested possessions from his 23 which is a mighty effort. If you have Fyfe and Neale in your side you have a tough decision each week on who to captain! A good problem to have.

James Sicily $501,700 Def – 128 pts

Sicily is playing a great role across half back and his scores have been on the way up. His 128 at the weekend should see him at the top of a lot of shopping lists. He will be a top-six defender.

Jayden Short $400,500 Def – 126 pts

Short was popular last season before his elbow injury and came back well late in the year. But his start to this season has been even better and he has the role we thought would steal points from Houli. Both of the halfback pair have been scoring well when they have played together.

Todd Goldstein $678,700 Ruc – 151 pts

Goldy is going from strength to strength this season. He left the ground during a game for the first time against the Swans, although he still played 96 per cent game time. He is getting plenty of the ball, kicking goals and dominating hit-outs. His mobility makes these shorter quarters very suited to his game. He may be the one to bring in if you have a Sam Jacobs, Sam Naismith or Marc Pittonet when his price maxes out.

Todd Goldstein is in a rich vein of form.

Travis Boak $616,200 Mid – 159 pts

Boak has continued on this season where he left off the last one. He hasn’t been below 110 in his first three games and this was his best score yet. With more attention going to Port’s youngsters he has been left a bit more open and is able to exploit that. He would be a very handy unique in your side with scores like this one.

Caleb Daniel $528,900 Def – 134 pts

He was someone many coaches considered when they saw the original draw for 2020 with so many early games at Marvel for the Bulldogs. But not many picked Daniel and I bet they wish they did. He has had scores of 92, 83 and 134 this season and is their go-to guy out of defence. He is a great option and is looking like a chance to be a top-six defender.

Rookie watch

For this section we classify a rookie as anyone from the number 1 draft pick down, so any player cheaper than Matthew Rowell’s price.

You may want to trade these guys in if you don’t have them yet:

Matthew Rowell 141. It seems unfair to classify him as a rookie, he is an amazing player and will be a Supercoach must have for a lot of years to come on this form.

Marc Pittonet 137 has come out of the blocks fast as the replacement for the injured Kreuzer.

Ben King 130 had a fantastic game and really dominated the Suns forward 50 early. Has a great pair of hands.

Dan Butler 124 (not a rookie but started the season at just $234k)

Brett Bewley 93, Brandon Starcevich 89, Connor Budarick 80, Tyler Brown 80, Jarrod Brander 75, Jye Caldwell 67, John Noble 64, Laitham Vandermeer 53, Ben Crocker 54, Fischer Mcasey 53, Tom Williamson 53, Max King 51, Noah Anderson 51, Marlion Pickett 50.

You may want to keep these guys on the bench if you can:

Sam Sturt 11 (Sturt injured an ankle, tried to come back on but couldn’t go again. He may be missing for a week or two)
