Gary Ablett is gone for the year but Hawthorn superstar Luke Hodge may be the SuperCoach saviour

GARY Ablett has been lost for the rest of the SuperCoach season but star Hawk Luke Hodge might be the man to save us.

WELCOME to the Nightmare on Cavill Avenue Part III.

The horror story that is the fall of Gary Ablett has produced yet another sequel.

Yes, for the third consecutive season we’ve lost our SuperCoach saviour before finals.

Ablett’s shoulder has gone bung again, with surgery meaning he will be warehoused until 2017.

But it is how you write your own ending to this frightening tale that matters most. Will it be set in the dark of the night at a rusty, old cemetery with skeletons and zombies lurking in the shadows?

Or will cameras instead pan to fields of sunshine filled with flowers and smiles beneath a colourful rainbow?

Of those two scenes, Hawthorn warrior Luke Hodge belongs more in the former. But pick him and you could instead be smelling the roses.

Because in Hodge, you have a bold, left-field pick that could take you to fantasy glory.

Battered and bruised — and playing with the aid of bike shorts, an arm guard and a glove — Hodge has returned from a spate of injuries in schmick touch.

The veteran who was drafted the same year as Ablett completed a mini pre-season before his AFL return and so is as fit as they come.

Strangely, he sits in just 1 per cent of SuperCoach sides. Still need a killer fact to pick this legend?

Consider this. Hodge finished 2015 with scores of 140, 113, 83, 108, 60, 121, 139, 98 and 134.

That spanned from Round 16 until the Grand Final. This bloke knows when to play good footy and it begins for him now.

Priced at $466,200, this trade would bank you $120,000 to spend up elsewhere. Fremantle’s Lachie Neale and Sydney dynamos Luke Parker and Dan Hannebery have otherwise dominated Ablett trades.

But if Hodge doesn’t do it for you, go the other end of the spectrum. Pick SuperCoach’s next version of Ablett in Marcus Bontempelli.

The prized pup only needs 20 disposals to ton up given the monster impact he has on games. And with 30-possession games fast becoming the norm, ‘The Bont’ is fast pumping scores greater than 140.

He is in Brownlow form, All-Australian form and SuperCoach form.

Ablett is gone. But there’s nothing like a happy ending.
