It’s official.
After months of speculation on the official nickname of the incoming Tasmanian AFL club, the competition’s newest side will be called the Tasmania Devils Football Club.
Revealed on an historic night for football in the Apple Isle, the name, foundation jumper, logo and designs were unveiled with the widely tipped ‘Devils’ moniker winning out at Monday’s official launch.
Speculation built for months on if Tasmania would be able to use the Devils nickname – due to a copyright ownership by media entity Warner Brothers – but the overridingly popular name indeed won out.
A snarling caricature of the home-grown marsupial has been used as its flagship branding with players to be decked out in the classic green state jumper with an enlarged “Map” on the front.
Tasmania Football Club chair Grant O’Brien said it was a truly special day.
“Today is a special day, one we have waited a long time for – and one we will remember for a long time,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Your club has been blown away by the community support shown at Monday night’s launch events.
“It has been a truly special moment in our state’s football history with thousands of Tasmanians joining in the cheers and tears as we, together, unveiled our club.
“From Nubeena to King Island, Devonport to Swansea, Tasmanians in all corners of the state celebrated and revelled in the excitement of our club’s historic launch.
“Football really is a community connector and that couldn’t have been truer across Tasmania tonight.
“It is the Tasmania Football Club’s privilege and pleasure to be able to share these elements with you – elements brought to life by the community, for the community.”
THE CLUB COLOURS
O’Brien said there was a clear reason why the club selected the colours it had.
“Our football history is breathtaking. Our colours will represent all of us on the national stage and be a beacon for our state pride,” he said.
“Our new club launched on Monday night, but our football heritage dates back over 150 years. Footy is part of the fabric of what it means to be Tasmanian. Our colours are a demonstration of our amazing football lineage but also signal our bold new era.
“In 1908, our colours were agreed, and I can tell you our traditional colours will endure.
“Our colours will remain myrtle green, primrose yellow and rose red but as of Monday night we breathe fresh life into them.”
THE NAME
“As I look to the future, I see the opportunity that our entry into the AFL and AFLW will bring,” O’Brien said.
“It is important that our name represents who we are and where we are heading. Tasmanians are unique. We are humble, we show grit and determination, and we can often be a bit cheeky.
“Tasmanians are strong with a powerful sense of place. The nickname of our Club has two elements.
“It represents our place, the place we are so proud to be from. Combined with one of our most distinctive residents, an inhabitant that makes us proud, is strong and unique to our place.
“We are the Tasmania Devils……..or in Palawa Kani “purinina”.”
THE JUMPER
“This jumper is one that has been worn with pride for many years and we will take to the national stage as we compete in the AFL and AFLW,” O’Brien said.
“The famous jumper bearing the map of our island has endured many contests and famous victories and inspired our champions and our supporters over the years – it’s our flag and we will ensure it continues to fly and be worn proudly.
“We will have other jumpers that this Club plays in, but at their heart will be the map.”
