Clarence embarrassed Glenorchy the first time they met but Magpies repay the compliment in TSL round eight

It left them scarred and seeking revenge but the Magpies claimed their payback for their loss to Clarence earlier this season by downing the Roos by 29 points at KGV on Saturday.

REVENGE is a dish best served cold but a red-hot Glenorchy dished up a steaming pile of humble pie to arch rival Clarence at KGV on Saturday after the Roos embarrassed the boys in black and white at Richmond Oval in round three.

It was a cracking contest in spring-like conditions and despite Glenorchy jumping Clarence in the first quarter there was only three points in it two minutes before half-time.

That’s when the Magpies hit the accelerator with goals deep into red time and from there they made sure of it by kicking four of the six goals scored in the second half.

The 12.9 (81) to 7.10 (7.10 (52) even put a smile on the hard-to-please Pies coach Paul Kennedy as his lads celebrated with cheers and smiles and a platter full of scones topped with jam and cream.

“There was such a steely determination in the group — even guys who didn’t play last time,” Kennedy said.

“They knew this was a big job for us today, not only for our season but for the club.

“To lose to Clarence like we did that day was unacceptable and the boys responded with a very mature brand of footy.

“Except for a couple of periods in the second and fourth quarters I thought they owned the game. They were in control most of the time.

“It’s great when they execute like that.”

Clarence coach Jeromey Webberley did his best to lift the side with his work behind the ball and penetrating into attack, while defender Keegan Wyllie took strong intercept marks and full-back Zac Buechner had his hands full dampening the impact of Jaye Bowden.

Glenorchy’s midfield set up the win by hustling hard, winning crucial clearances, and applying pressure that meant Clarence’s forwards saw too much “dirty” football to apply matchwinning scoreboard pressure.

“Over the last three games in particular our midfield has executed a defensive plan really well that has made it hard for opposition teams to get good looks into their forward line,” Kennedy said.

“It’s still a work in progress but they are really owning what we are trying to do.”

Onballer Callum Daly top-scored with three goals, which easily could have been five, and Mitch Rainbird drilled two along with John Geard and Bowden.
