Construction has been operating ‘very safely’ for the last 18 months

A century-old tennis club will make way for two dozen new social housing dwellings in New Town if a planning application gets the green light.

Centacare Evolve Housing will soon submit a planning application for the construction of up to 24 social dwellings on a unique residential infill development site in New Town.

The land at 73a New Town Road was owned by the Catholic Church’s Cathedral Parish and has been used by the New Town Catholic Tennis Club for about 100 years before it was offered for sale to the public in May 2020.

Centacare Evolve Housing CEO said the 1934sq m parcel of land was a prime location for new housing, being only 4km from Hobart’s CBD.

“The land had been utilised by the community for decades prior to being sold last year,” Mr Wilson said.

“It’s very pleasing to announce that our plans for the development of the land will continue to benefit the community — this time through social housing.

“Rising real estate prices and rental costs are making it very difficult for Tasmanians to secure a roof over their head. We are committed to building critical infrastructure to increase supply of much needed housing across the state.”

Mr Wilson said neighbours were notified of the intention to submit a planning application for the land and were invited to an information session held Tuesday night at the Mt Stuart Hall.

“Generally, the information session went quite well,” he said.

“It’s important for neighbouring residents to have all of the correct information at hand to inform their decision making. We prefer to work with neighbouring residents by listening to their questions, or concerns if they have any.”

The project is funded under the State Government’s Community Housing Growth Program which aims to deliver 1000 homes for Tasmanians in need.
