The director general and CEO of news at the BBC have resigned following criticism the corporation misled viewers by editing a speech of US President Donald Trump.

The move comes after a leaked internal memo claimed BBC’s Panorama program edited together sections of Mr Trump’s speech at the “Stop the Steal” rally to make it seem like he incited the January 2021 Capitol Hill riots.

“There have been some mistakes made and as Director-General I have to take ultimate responsibility,” BBC director general Tim Davie said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the US Senate is expected to vote on a bill to end the record-breaking government shutdown.

Earlier, Mr Trump has promised a $2000 (A$3080) payment for every American as a tariff “dividend”.

“A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone,” he wrote on Truth Social, adding “people that are against Tariffs are FOOLS!”
