One man dead, two others rescued in Perth boat capsizing incident

The alarm was raised just before midday when three people and their capsized boat was spotted in waters off Perth’s northern beaches.

A man’s been killed in a boating incident in waters off Perth’s northern suburbs.

A member of the public reported seeing an overturned vessel off the coast of Alkimos, about 42km north of Perth’s CBD, just before midday.

Three people were spotted in the water near the capsized 4.75m boat, about 10 nautical miles from the coast, with the two survivors and the body of the third person in the water for about two hours.

Yanchep police senior sergeant Jamie Brennan told media on Friday afternoon a report is being prepared for the coroner.

“The two survivors and the deceased were returned to the shore and the capsized vessel was also towed back here where it was seized and part of the ongoing investigation,” Mr Brennan said.

“Interim information received would indicate that the vessel was anchored, they came into some difficulty, and shortly thereafter, the vehicle capsized.

“They did have emergency equipment on board and the survivors were wearing life jackets and an orange smoke flare was deployed.”

Mr Brennan said he’s spoken to the two survivors.

“They’re obviously shaken as one would expect, having lost one of their friends, however physically they appear to be okay,” he said.

“There was a fair bit of swell out there today … the sea can be an unforgiving environment.”

The search effort included two aircraft, water police, and DFES Marine Rescue.
