Backpacker, 24, injured in frightening attack in public toilet at WA beach

A 24-year-old backpacker was taken to hospital after a scary attack in a toilet block at an Aussie beach.

A German backpacker has been injured in a frightening attack in a public toilet at a beach in Western Australia.

Police are on the hunt for a group of young males who they say approached the 24-year-old tourist at about 10.40pm on Monday at St Georges Beach in Bluff Point, Geraldton.

Geraldton is a coastal city about 420kms north of Perth. It is promoted as a great spot for travellers to base themselves to visit popular attractions in the region like the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Hutt Lagoon (Pink Lake), Coalseam Conservation Park and Leaning Tree.

Police said the group were wearing face coverings and “threatened the victim and demanded he hand over his valuables”.

“The victim refused and was physically assaulted before being struck with what is believed to be a gardening tool,” a statement said.

The Geraldton Guardian reported the group threatened to chop the tourist’s arm, demanding he hand over his clothing and jewellery.

Geraldton detectives are urging people who live in the area to review any security footage they have and check for any missing gardening tools that may have been stolen.

Police believe the group they are searching for may have been in the Beresford and Bluff Point areas before and after the incident.
