Brendan Fevola rages at Jordan De Goey after latest Bali scandal

Brendan Fevola has warned Jordan De Goey off going down the same path as him, giving the scandal-ridden Pie some stern words of advice.

Brendan Fevola says Jordan De Goey risks wasting his career like he did, if he throws away his gift of playing football.

Fevola, whose career was marred by off-field scandals, says the Collingwood star is on his last chance.

“If I was to sit down with Jordan De Goey, I’d say mate, you’re 26, you had a $3.2 million contract on the table from Collingwood, it’s been torn up so he’s going to have to work his butt off for the next couple of months,’’ Fevola said on his Fifi, Fev and Nick radio show on FOX FM.

“He’s probably got eight years left of footy, maximum. He needs to set himself up so he can do whenever he wants at 32 … you are blessed to be playing footy and earning money that people would dream about earning. Don’t go anywhere and if you go somewhere, don’t tell anyone.

“Don’t go to Bali — what’s wrong with you, bro? It doesn’t matter if you stuff up or not, it’s going to come back, it’s going to look bad.

“When I left footy, I was not respected. I played great footy. My career is never talked about with any other gun forward because of my off-field antics. That’s my own fault, I have to deal with that. I had no respect, everyone thought I was a wanker.

“And he’s going down a similar path. He’s got no more chances, all his strikes are gone, if he stuffs up again, he’s done.”

Fevola said De Goey needed better people around him to help restore his reputation.

“I had a rap sheet too, the club gets sick of it,’’ Fevola said.

“They let him go — that’s a red flag, they shouldn’t have let him go in the first place.

“He just started to get his reputation back, playing great football.

“I was in a similar situation back when I was playing footy, I didn’t really have the people around me, I was just a d---head pretty much and I thought I was better than anything else and it cost me my career. And I finished the game at 29.”

Fevola added: “He can earn millions of dollars. I finished with not a cent to my name because I’d blown it all. If he stuffs up again, it’s over. You’re blessed to be playing footy, you’ve been gifted a gift.

“Put your head down and earn that respect back. He’s in the wrong circle, his manager is his brother-in-law, he’d be a yes man. Get some people around you who tell you the hard truth.

“If you don’t want to play footy, go somewhere else. You ruin it for your teammates as well. That’s not fair as well.”

Fury over ADHD diagnosis ‘excuse’

A domestic violence advocacy group has hit out at De Goey for blaming an ADHD diagnosis for his disrespectful behaviour.

Full Stop Australia chief executive Hayley Foster said: “Attributing disrespectful and abusive behaviour to an ADHD diagnosis is an insult to people with ADHD.

“ADHD does not cause disrespectful attitudes towards women and girls.”

Ms Foster added that she was disappointed with Collingwood’s move to give De Goey (above) a $25,000 suspended fine, saying it was an opportunity missed. “Where there is a pattern of disrespectful and abusive behaviour over time, the risk is higher, and we would expect the club to respond with a stronger sanction,” she said.

“This was an opportunity for the Collingwood Football Club to set the standard for respectful behaviour towards women and girls.”

De Goey parties in Bali during bye week

On Tuesday, Collingwood refused to guarantee De Goey would be at the club next year as it postponed contract talks with the star and handed him the suspended fine.

The decision to fine De Goey for his videoed Bali nightclub antics came after two days of high-levels talks with the 26-year-old, who was initially adamant he had done nothing wrong.

Finally after long discussions, the Pies were able to convince De Goey of the manner in which he had disrespected women after trying to expose a woman’s breast in a nightclub.

De Goey did not appear on Tuesday but in a statement said he had “betrayed the trust” of the club and apologised, revealing he had been diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) late last year.

He cited the condition as a reason why he made mistakes.

De Goey is set to speak about his ADHD and level of contrition in coming days, but the nature of the forum has not yet been decided.

Trio slammed for ‘male self-entitlement’

Leading anti-domestic violence activist Phil Cleary has criticised the actions and apologies of Collingwood trio Jordan De Goey, Jack Ginnivan and Isaac Quaynor, saying it’s taken far too long for clubs to educate their players about treating women respectfully.

Cleary said the Magpies should have learned from De Goey’s New York incident in October to prevent more male self-entitlement behaviour.

“The TikTok was taken down because yet again women were being reduced to playthings and underlings, on the back of Jordan De Goey appearing to try to expose a woman’s breast in a nightclub,’’ Cleary said.

“Yet again, male self-entitlement, at the expense of women, has reared its ugly head.

“Imagine being a member of Collingwood’s women’s team and thinking the blokes were rating you out of 10.

“When the De Goey story emerged last year, I said that Collingwood needed to ask him why he thought he’d been charged and why the more serious charges were dropped. Maybe they did that.

“But did they step him through, what more and more modern women are saying about their place in society and how they expect equality and won’t accept what some self-entitled footballers seem to think, comes with the territory?”

Ginnivan and Quaynor rate women on social media

Just last Sunday Cleary held a minute’s silence at Vicki Cleary Day, where he called on the Coburg and Richmond players and the men on the terraces to put an end to the attitudes that sustain the abuse of women.

Cleary’s sister Vicki died in 1987 at the hands of her violent boyfriend.

After the De Goey incident Cleary, a long-time campaigner, called for the AFL to show real leadership on the issues of gender equality and violence against women.

“Although former player Kane Cornes was outraged by the De Goey video, he didn’t talk about male entitlement or chauvinism,’’ Cleary said.

“In his eyes the fact that De Goey had been ‘lured into temptation in the past’ meant it was ‘a dumb decision’ to go to Bali. As far as I could see what happened in New York or Bali had nothing to do with temptation and everything to do with male self-entitlement. In any case, in my opinion, raising the spectre of temptation has very dangerous connotations.

“The TikTok video isn’t a hanging offence but it risks reinforcing the pervasive notion of women as men’s underlings, something we must eradicate if we’re to shred the disrespect which is the bedrock of the abuse of women.

“Just what a respectful, modern football club looks like is a discussion every football club should be having.”
