Australian poker ace Jackie Glazier is suing the producers of the Channel 10 hit Australian Survivor after sustaining a serious and debilitating injury during a challenge on the 2023 season of the reality show.

Glazier, whose first name is Jackqueline, has launched legal action against Endemol Shine Australia in the Victorian Supreme Court and is seeking damages, loss of past and future earnings, and medical expenses after she broke her collarbone while hurling herself over a huge, rotating cube and smashing into the bottom of a muddy, shallow pit on the other side of the object in a challenge that contestants had to undertake. She took no further part in the show.

Fellow contestant George Mladenov was also injured in the same challenge, which took place during the first episode of the Australian Survivor: Heroes vs Villains series which was filmed in Samoa in August/September 2022 and aired in 2023.

Glazier was contracted by Endemol Shine Australia to take part in the show. She was paid $25,000 and was competing for a $500,000 first prize.

In court documents it is claimed Endemol Shine Australia owed a duty of care to Glazier and that the rotating cube challenge was unsafe.

In a Statement of Claim, filed on behalf of Glazier by law firm Arnold Thomas & Becker, it is claimed contestants were “totally dependent, for the protection of their persons, upon Endemol ensuring that challenges were safe and conducted safely.”

The Statement of Claim alleges the water in the cube challenge pit that Glazier fell into was not deep enough, being 30cm rather than 1m to 1.5m deep, and that the dirt at the bottom of the pit had not been sufficiently broken up to provide a safe landing.

As well as suffering a broken collarbone, the injury to Glazier’s right shoulder also included ligament damage and resulted in the development of thoracic outlet syndrome and pain and restriction of movement of her right shoulder and arm.

Since the show, Glazier has been unable to do a range of household duties because of her injury and has had to hire a gardener and have help in the house. It is also claimed that the injuries have affected her concentration and had an impact on her activities as a poker ambassador.

Glazier is being represented by Aki Munir, principal with Arnold Thomas & Becker lawyers, who previously represented big wave surfer Ross Clarke-Jones in his legal action against the producers of Survivor.

“As Ms Glazier suffered a debilitating injury during filming of the reality show we are claiming damages, loss of past and future earnings, and medical expenses for the injuries sustained during a challenge,” Ms Munir said.
