WA police commission Col Blanch has commended students as young as 12 who called Triple Zero to assist police after a former student allegedly fired a gun at their school.

Young students were forced to take cover in their classrooms on Wednesday after a former student allegedly fired gunshots into the school in Perth's northern suburbs forcing it into lockdown.

Three shots were fired, including one which penetrated a school building with people inside, just before midday on Wednesday, at Atlantis Beach Baptist College in Two Rocks.

A 15-year-old former student of the school has been taken into custody, and two rifles have been seized by police.

"We found three shells, we believe three gunshots were fired and we at least know one of them did hit a school building, “WA Commissioner Col Blanch said, adding the building had people inside at the time.

"I've never seen anything like it"

Commissioner Blanch told media he was shocked when he got the call about the alarming incident.

"When I heard the reports of what had happened today, it really shocked me that this had occurred in Western Australia," he said.

"This is one of the rarest incidents in Australia, as police commissioner I've never seen anything like it here in WA or anywhere in Australia for that matter in my time as a police officer."

All staff and students at the school have been accounted for, and there have been no reports of injuries.

He praised the teachers and students for their action during the terrifying ordeal, with many children, including as young as 12, calling Triple Zero to assist police.

“These poor kids, it was the unknown for those kids, they didn’t know what they were facing, the teachers didn’t know what they were facing," he said.

“The calmness of those teachers to enact those protocols, and students calling Triple Zero to help police… to result in no injuries... is the best outcome we could have ever hoped for.”

"We were hugging each other"

Students speaking to 9News shared their terror after being told to hide in their classrooms.

"We had to move the desks, and then hide under the desks, and be quiet and stay down," one high school student said.

Another shared how she feared the danger was getting closer to them.

"Our teacher said 'get under your desks', she locked the doors and closed the windows and then we were under there for a quite a long time," she said.

"We heard footsteps going on the deck, and that’s what really got me scared, because I thought it was the guy coming."

“We were hugging each other, and I was comforting my friend because she was really scared.”

Student used father's firearm

Commissioner Blanch said there was a long investigation ahead.

“How does a 15yo get hold of two lethal weapons and fire them into a school area," he asked.

"We will certainly look into every aspect of this investigation to understand how a 15-year-old person is allegedly in possession of two long-armed rifles and has shot into a school in these terrible circumstances."

Commissioner Blanch said it was believed the firearms were registered to the boy's father.
