The Day of the Dead Fiesta is returning to Townsville for a joyful celebration of life’s journey.
El Día de los Muertos or ‘Day of the Dead’; is a Mexican holiday at the start of November that honours the souls of the deceased with food, drink, and celebration.
This Saturday, Global Dance Collective (GDC), together with Otherwise, are bringing the event back to the city.
GDC director Cara Griffin said the festival was a lovely way to celebrate people that have passed and the people that we love.
“We also have a Best Dressed competition, and people will dress in their best Mexican finery, and whatever they believe would be an acknowledgment of the people they loved who have passed.”
She said they were expecting some elaborate costumes and masks.
“A lot of the masks have flower designs or floral designs on them, and they are reminiscent of the Mexican folk artwork that comes from a lot of the particular regions in Mexico.
“They’re very brightly coloured, lots of flowers, lots of swirl patterns and skull designs as well.”
Ms Griffin said there would be performances by some of North Queensland’s finest dance, circus and music artists and also social dancing and face painting.
The Day of the Fiesta is at the Otherwise Bar at Molly Malones from 5pm-10pm and tickets at the door or go to https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1268764
