The Mercury has put together a list of online shopping directories helping Tasmanians pick up local, last-minute, home-delivered gifts for Mother’s Day. Have you got a gift for your mum yet?

Mother’s Day: the gifts to give when you can’t take mum out for lunch

ONLINE shopping directories are helping Tasmanians pick up local, last-minute, home-delivered gifts for Mother’s Day.

Locally-made jewellery, clothing, bath and body products, candles, edible treats and alcoholic beverages are among the goods being sold online, with home delivery and click and collect services ensuring Tassie mums can still be spoiled this Sunday.

Destination Southern Tasmania has created a Mother’s Day shopping guide while the

Hobart Twilight Market is running a virtual market on Facebook.

Other sites including Buy Something Tasmanian and Wine Tasmania have built portals for showcasing Tasmanian products, while Salamanca Market is also trading online.

Hobart Twilight Market operations manager Justin Davies said his newly-created directory had been popular with Mother’s Day shoppers, with businesses well prepared for a last-minute rush.

“Many local businesses have been disrupted by COVID-19, so we’re doing what we can to help our stallholders,’’ Mr Davies said.

He said many businesses were offering free local delivery or pick-up services enabling unique, last-minute gifts to be purchased contact-free.

Handmade earrings, bath bombs and gifts inspired by nature are among the products on offer via the virtual market, as well as cider, beer, wine and limoncello.

Meanwhile at Hobart and Beyond, food-loving mums can enjoy delicious, home-delivered fare from businesses including Bruny Island Cheese Co, Grandvewe Cheeses, Coal River Farm, Federation Artisan Chocolate, The Honey Pot, Fat Pig Farm, Port Arthur Lavender, Willie Smith’s Apple Shed, Barilla Bay Oysters, Harvest and Light, Masaaki’s Sushi, Society Salamanca and Hadley’s Orient Hotel, which is offering high teas at home for Mother’s Day.

The service has been so popular that it has already sold out, with 200 freshly-baked high tea packs to be served to mums at home this Sunday.

Destination Southern Tasmania chief executive officer Alex Heroys said it was great to see so many Tasmanians supporting innovative local businesses this Mother’s Day and hoped the trend would continue as Tasmanians rushed to pick up last-minute gifts.

“The reality is that the tourism and hospitality industries have been hit earliest and hardest in this COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s also a brilliant indication of how clever and collaborative the industries have become,’’ he said.

“They’ve been pivoting their businesses to accommodate new demand and there have been some incredibly interesting and innovative ideas coming out of that.’’
