TASMANIA’S homeless will now be able to escape the chill of winter with gear fit for Antarctic expeditioners.
The Australian Antarctic Division has donated gear and clothing previously used on the icy continent to the Hobart City Mission.
Technology and innovation general manager Phillip Boxall said now was an opportune time to give back to those in need.
“It was a measure that was instigated within the Australian Antarctic Division, which was a really nice thing,” he said.
“We want to help assist the community, especially those in need during the cooler months.”
Sleeping bags, fleece liners, thermals, polar-fleece jackets and tops are among the items being donated.
Hobart City Mission chief executive John Stubley said the items would make a big difference to those sleeping rough.
The gear and clothing will be distributed through the Safe Spaces in Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie.
Hobart City Mission is still accepting donations through its Moonah sorting warehouse and website.
