GABI and Rosa Hollows have taken the life-changing work of the Fred Hollows Foundation all over the world but it’s here in Tasmania they plan to kick off a new journey.
Over the month of August the wife and daughter of the late revolutionary eye surgeon will join with friends and family interstate and overseas by walking or running 50km to raise vital funds for the foundation.
Rosa moved to Hobart three years ago to further her construction career, while Gabi, the Fred Hollows Foundation founding director, is temporarily living in the state following the birth of her grandson Louie.
The Hollows family hopes $500,000 can be raised through the Fred’s Big Run fundraiser – a figure which could restore sight to 20,000 people. In 2018 the foundation performed 930,000 eye operations.
“Having been overseas and seen the foundation’s work in practice in places like Nepal, it’s amazing to see how many people have been treated and how those numbers stack up,” Rosa said.
“It’s heartening when you see that that’s exactly where those donations are going.”
Gabi said the foundation had exceeded all expectations that were set out upon its formation in 1992.
“I can’t thank people enough for believing in us,” she said.
“A donation to me is the same whether it’s two bucks or $200,000. It all is so special to people.”
