A PANDEMIC may have been lacking in inspiration for Hobart’s own light, bright and high energy pop royalty Asta, but the songstress learnt to used the time in lockdown to her advantage.
Since moving home in January and the world turning on its head, Asta Binnie has learnt new skills, recorded new music and is gearing up for the next phase of her career.
“It has definitely been a weird adjustment, but it’s kind of really pushed me creatively to do lots of things,” she said.
From DYI recording and home made music videos to working on new collaborations via Skype, Asta has found herself the loving the opportunity to get creative.
She featured on electronic dance duo Lonely Disco’s new track Dust It Off, released last month after workshopping the song via Skype and recording the vocals in her mum’s garage.
Asta expects to drop a new single of her own next month and has been piecing together her debut album which she says will be full of different musical flavours and is something she has wanted to do for years.
“This time has allowed me to just go back and look through my catalogue of songs and just figure out what I actually want to put out and move into a new phase of my career.
“It’s sounding very funky, R&B, very influenced with 90s house … and still on the whole 80s thing as well, which is hard to shake for me.”
Asta was launched into the national spotlight as a teenager when she won Triple J Radio’s Unearthed High competition with her song My Heart is on Fire in 2012.
“It’s just weird to think where I would be if that didn’t happen.
“[Triple J] is a huge part of where I am now and their support has been super fundamental to my career.”
