A GLASS is believed to have been smashed into the side of a patron’s face in unprovoked attack at a popular Launceston pub on Saturday night.

The alleged unprovoked attack took place as a man was being escorted out of the Commercial Hotel by security staff.

Tasmania Police said the patron was facing away from the offender at the time of the attack, and the two were not believed to be known to each other.

The alleged attacker was subsequently ejected from the venue and arrested by police outside.

The patron sustained a number of lacerations to his face and will undergo surgery at the Launceston General Hospital.

The man was detained to appear in court on Sunday.
