TWO motorbike riders have been charged by police in Launceston after they were allegedly detected speeding on unregistered motorbikes under the influence of drugs.

In a statement, police said members of Northern Road & Public Order Services detected two motorbikes travelling together in excess of 160km/h on the Bass Highway between Westbury and Launceston about 5.15pm on Tuesday.

The riders were found by police in the Launceston CBD a short time later, and police said both riders failed roadside drug testing and both motorbikes were unregistered.

A 29-year-old Deloraine man and a 32-year-old Prospect man will face charges for speeding, unregistered/uninsured motor vehicle, and drug offences. They will appear before the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date.

Both motorbikes were impounded by police for 28 days.
