THE stakes on the runway were as high as the racing on the track with two locals taking home the title of Launceston Cup fashion king and queen.
Monique Schramm said winning Wednesday’s fashions on the field competition had been extra satisfying, because she made the dress herself.
Ms Schramm said the creamy dress was made to a vintage 1950s-era pattern.
“It is a case of ‘old is new again’,’’ Ms Schramm said.
She said she found the pattern while rifling through storage boxes at her mum’s place.
She had first worn the dress at a wedding about a year ago.
Ms Schramm said the designer of her professionally made hat, which won the competition’s millinery section, had been inspired by a photo of her dress.
“It’s a very classic cream cap. The beautiful swirls and feathers … adds a bit of extra zing,’’ she said.
“I’m studying fashion at TAFE, it’s an end game for me to get into fashion.”

Launceston’s Marcus Dornauf, “a berry farmer by day”, said his unexpected fashion stakes win was in stark contrast to the thrashing that his Launceston Guerrillas gridiron team had given to the Hobart Knights to win the state title just last Saturday.
“It’s interesting … a couple of good boasts,’’ he said.
Mr Dornauf said, who had never had much cause to dress up until yesterday, said he decided to enter the competition after seeing it last year and had bought his suit at a Christmas sale.
