Proposal to build 500 homes at Hobart Showground Precinct

A new multimillion-dollar project proposed for Greater Hobart could include 500 new homes, including a provision for affordable housing.

THE redevelopment of the Hobart Showground precinct could include up to 500 new homes, according to a vision by the show society.

The proposed multimillion-dollar project is still in the planning stages, with a Hobart-based architect appointed to undertake a concept masterplan for the 12 ha site.

But those behind the project want hundreds of new homes — a proportion of them to be designated as affordable housing — to be built there.

Royal Agricultural Society CEO Scott Gadd said it was hoped between 300 and 500 new dwellings could be built at the site.

“We think our site is perfect for that use because of where it is,’’ he said.

“Good parking, good access, great public transport. All the services you need.”

Mr Gadd said it was “critical” that more initiatives were identified to address shortfalls in housing in greater Hobart.

The architects, Partners Hill, were briefed on the plans last week, with a first draft of the masterplan expected by April. Plans for the precinct also include a new visitor centre and an emergency centre for people and animals in times of natural disaster.

Mr Gadd said it was hoped the masterplan would be complete by the end of the year, with discussions to then take place with stakeholders, including state and federal governments and community housing providers.

He said the goal of the masterplan was to reinvigorate the site, the show and the society.

Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston said she understood the plans were in their infancy.

“We know there’s immense pressure to deliver more housing and we welcome the opportunity to work with any developer on the greater supply of housing stock,’’ she said.

The planned housing development at the showground is one of many housing projects either planned or already underway in the region.

A proposed redevelopment of Wilkinsons Point near the Derwent Entertainment Centre — as part of a masterplan from National Basketball League owner Larry Kestelman — also could include student accommodation.

The deal for the upgrade of the DEC itself, which involves the Glenorchy City Council and the State Government, is still under negotiation.
