One of the Tasmanians leading schools has lodged a development application for a new ‘Signature Building’, vehicle crossover, an underpass and upgrades to utilities including stormwater pipelines.

The Hutchins School has submitted plans with Hobart Council for a new Signature Building which has been proposed to be constructed where existing sports fields are below the Senior School on Nelson Rd.

The application lodged said the Signature Building will facilitate the gathering of the entire school as well as providing indoor sports facilities including a multipurpose auditorium and sports hall, offices, gymnasium and amenities.

Included in the design is access for service vehicles from Nelson Rd including two accessible carparking spaces.

The 2.68ha site which is currently serviced with utilities including power, communications, gas, water, sewer and stormwater connections will be upgraded to support the new building.

Hutchins principal Rob McEwan said the new improvements to the campus will enable both schools to be more connected.

“The Hutchins School undertook a Master Planning process in recent years that identified a need to build a space that enables our whole school community to come together,” he said.

“The first stage of the Master Plan is to build a multipurpose facility that will include space for the whole school to gather, as well as facilities for indoor sports and performance.

“After an extensive consultation period, the plans have been submitted as a development application to the Hobart City Council where they are currently being considered.”

The buildings plan will not create an overshadowing and will not be of visual impact for neighbouring properties, including aged care facility Queenborough Rise.

“The Master Plan includes an underpass to enable students to move from the Junior and Middle School to the new building that will be located on the Senior School part of the campus,” Mr McEwan said.

The proposal will not increase classroom or teaching spaces and wont increase the number of students or staff at the school.
