Wet, frosty and snowy conditions forecast for next week

It’ll be a wet end to the school holidays across Tasmania this weekend before frosty and snowy conditions set in next week. WARNINGS + FORECAST >>

Tasmanians will be making the most of the sunshine today before rain sets in over the weekend, bringing a soggy end to the school holidays.

Five-year-old Fergus and dad Mat Hunnibell spent the day catching some rays down at the West Hobart skate bowl, but admitted they were ready for the cooler weather.

“The weather has been fantastic these holidays but we’re ready for some snow on the mountain.” said Mr Hunnibell.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Anna Forrest said Hobart could see snow falling to around 800m next Wednesday after kunanyi saw its first dusting of the year last week.

Forecasts are showing a snow shower or two for both Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures dropping to 0C on the peak of the mountain.

“The snow may linger into Thursday morning,” said Ms Forrest.

“We could also see it in the Central Plateau and South West. In the Central North or Midlands they could be some frost but it’ll be too dry for snow there.”

The cool conditions come as two cold fronts are expected to make their way across the state over the next few days, one on Friday and another on Wednesday.

“We’ve got a trough coming through this afternoon that could bring some decent rainfalls across the north of the state and into tomorrow morning that’s going to feed into the already flooding South Esk River and could cause some problems with North Esk River depending on where the highest totals fall.”

BOM has issued a moderate flood warning for the South Esk River at Fingal which is expected to affect Llewellyn this afternoon while a minor flood warning is current for the North Esk River with minor flooding predicted at Corra Linn.

“After that there’s continuing shower activity right across the weekend mostly concentrating in the west and north of the state but that doesn’t mean that the south will be without any wet weather.” said Ms Forrest.

It’ll be a wet and windy day for both Hobart and Launceston tomorrow while showers are expected to ease on Sunday.

“It’s also going to get quite windy,” said Ms Forrest.

“For the coastal waters we’re looking at getting a gale wind warning for the south west ahead of the cold front that’s coming through and strong winds everywhere else across the coast,”

“Winds will ease off on Sunday and then it will start to ramp up again on Monday and Tuesday before the cold front comes through on Wednesday.”

The forecast shows temperatures will heat back up to the early 20s on Monday and Tuesday in Hobart ahead of another cold front due to pass on Wednesday, with temperatures dropping to a low of 8C and a high of 13C.
