Tasmanians are set to shiver during the Easter long weekend as rain, colder temperatures and snow and potential thunderstorms have been forecast across the state.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Alex Melitsis said north-easterly winds will bring rain to much of the North East on Friday.

“The wettest day for the northern and eastern parts of the state is expected to be on Friday and we could also see some thunderstorms along parts of the North East as well,” he said.

“We’re expecting anywhere between 15 to 35mm across much of Northern Tasmania but we’re expecting higher falls in elevated areas and higher falls in thunderstorms if they develop.

“Then we get a bit of a change in the weather, it starts to get cooler and south-westerly on Saturday.”

Mr Melitsis said colder air could lead to some dustings of snow on some peaks above 1000m on Sunday.

“We start to get quite a bit colder air coming down over the state and still remaining fairly showery, particularly across the western southern half of the states,” he said.

“We could see an additional 5mm across parts of the southern half of the states on Sunday, but it’s getting much colder.

“We’re not looking at a lot of rainfall on Sunday, just the odd shower or two passing through but I’ll tell you what, there probably will be a break between the showers where you can get outside and have a quick little Easter egg hunt.”
