ONE of the state’s top tourism figures has announced he will step down as CEO before the end of the financial year.

Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania (TICT) CEO Luke Martin, who held the role for 12 years and “helped guide the industry through an unprecedented period of growth and transformation”, will step down on June 30.

It comes as TICT Chair Daniel Leesong has paid tribute to the exiting CEO.

“It’s no coincidence that Luke’s time as CEO coincided with huge growth in the sector. These are big shoes to fill,” Mr Leesong said.

Luke Martin opinion: A stadium would put Tassie on the big stage

“He has been a brilliant, passionate and incredibly effective advocate for our industry.”

Mr Leesong said Mr Martin “should be proud of what he has achieved” and expressed gratitude for his contribution to the state’s tourism growth.

Mr Martin has recently been an outspoken supporter of the stadium at Macquarie Point and Tasmania’s AFL team licence.

He also backed plans to have a cable car on kunanyi / Mt Wellington, saying the infrastructure would advance the state’s tourism offering.

Mr Martin said the decision to leave was “difficult” but it was “time to move on”.

“This was more than just a job to me, I’m passionate about the industry and I will miss working with an incredible community,” Mr Martin said.

“However, the time has come to move on and let someone else help guide the industry through its next phase.

“I would like to thank the board and everyone in the industry for their support over the last 12 years.”

Mr Martin will remain as CEO until June 30.

The recruitment process for a new CEO will commence this week, TICT say.
