Tasmanians wanting to speak up about organised crime have been encouraged to break their silence anonymously, as part of a multimillion-dollar national campaign.

The ‘they’ll never know it was you’ campaign by Crime Stoppers will run for six months and was funded through a Proceeds of Crime Act grant of $3.55m.

Speaking to media in Hobart on Tuesday, Crimestoppers Tasmania Chair David Daniels said the campaign would focus on the supply chain of illicit drugs and encourage the community to share what they knew about the manufacturing, trafficking and dealing of drugs in the community.

“Nearly half of Australians have witnessed or heard about illegal activity,” he said.

“They can play a vital role in sharing what they know with Crime Stoppers if they wish,

“Crime stoppers is a safe and trusted organisation, people only need to share what they know without getting involved.”

Police Minister Felix Ellis said Tasmania Police were committed to working in partnership with Crime Stoppers through the campaign.

“The only people that benefit from illegal drugs in our communities are the drug dealers, the people who traffic this misery,” Mr Ellis said.

“The number of lives we have saved even with just this bust we see before us today, is enormous …”.

Tasmania Police Assistant Commissioner Rob Blackwood said Crime Stoppers was a key partner for the force when it came to gaining key intelligence.

“The message to the community out of here is: if you know something, you can provide any information anonymously and do it through Crime Stoppers,” Assistant Commissioner Blackwood said.

Anyone with information about illicit drug supply or trafficking can contact Crime Stoppers by calling a toll-free hotline on 1800 333 000 or reporting online at www.crimestoppers.com.au
