86yo killed in Bruny Island crash

10.30pm Thursday March 30: An 86-year-old woman has died following a single vehicle crash at Bruny Island Main Road, South Bruny Island on Thursday.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene about 12.50pm.

Tasmania Police say initial inquiries indicate the woman was travelling south on Bruny Island Main Road in a white Holden Barina hatch when it appears she may have suffered a medical episode.

Anyone with information or relevant dash cam footage, is asked to contact police on 131 444. Footage can be provided through the Tasmania Police evidence portal.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones,” a police spokesperson said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Road closed after two-vehicle crash

UPDATE 9.55am Thursday March 30:

The road is now clear.

INITIAL: A two-vehicle crash on a busy Hobart road has blocked traffic in both directions.

The top-end of Proctors Rd, Dynnyrne is currently blocked after a two-vehicle crash.

Police, as well as Tasmania Fire service and ambulance crews are on the scene.

Officers are currently directing traffic and motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route.

No serious injuries have been reported at this stage.

Attempted murder charge, Smithton

Wednesday, March 29: A Smithton man has been charged with attempted murder after an incident at Smithton on Tuesday night.

Tasmania Police in a statement said officers were called to Lialeeta Crescent at about 10.30pm after a man reportedly received “significant wounds” during an altercation.

Police allege the men are known to each other.

A knife is alleged to have been used in the incident.

The 26-year-old Smithton man was taken into custody at the scene and will appear before court on Wednesday evening.

The victim remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Shed fire, Bellerive

Wednesday, March 29: Fire fighters are on the scene of a structure fire on Clarence St, Bellerive.

Tasmania Fire Service has responded to a report of a shed fire.

Crews from Hobart, Rokeby and Clarence are on the scene and are currently containing the fire.

Truck rolls on Bass Highway

UPDATE 1.25pm:

The Bass Highway near Flowerdale is now clear from the earlier crash.

INITIAL: A truck has rolled on the Bass highway.

Police and emergency services are on the scene of the crash, which happened on the highway near Preolenna Rd, Flowerdale.

Tasmania Police in a statement said the highway will be blocked for about 10 minutes while the scene is cleared.

Delays are expected.

No serious injuries have been reported.

Call for witnesses – East Derwent Highway, Risdon Vale crash

Wednesday, March 29: Witnesses to a two-vehicle crash that happened at 5pm on Tuesday on the East Derwent Highway at Risdon Vale are being urged to contact police.

The crash occurred between a blue Ford Ranger 4WD with a black bull bar and a small white hatch outside the Pyramids at Risdon Cove, and was later reported to police.

Investigations into the crash continue, and police have put out a call to speak with any witnesses.

Dashcam footage from motorists who may have been in the area at the time is also being sought.

Frankford Highway crash

Wednesday, March 29: Tasmania police are investigating a serious crash on the Frankford Highway at Frankford that happened on Tuesday night.

At about 5.40pm, police and emergency services were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash.

Initial investigations suggest that a brown Mazda sedan travelling in a westerly direction with a single female occupant lost control in the wet conditions while negotiating a slight descent.

The vehicle is then though TO have crossed into the path of a white Toyota flat tray utility, also with a single female occupant, that was travelling in the opposite direction.

The crash caused both vehicles to leave the road.

Both drivers were taken to the Launceston General Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Mazda received serious injuries.

As a result, the Frankford Highway was closed for three hours.

Anyone with information in relation to the crash is urged to contact Tasmania police on 131 444.

Oil spill on Southern Outlet, Hobart

Tuesday, March 28: Motorists have been asked to drive with caution and to conditions after an oil spill was recorded on a Hobart highway.

The spill is located in the northbound lane, just past the Mount Nelson turn-off.

Car into power pole at Cressy

Tuesday, March 28: 4.08pm:

The earlier crash at Cressy is now clear.

EARLIER 1.25pm: Tasmania Police are on the scene of a single vehicle crash on Macquarie Rd at Cressy after a car hit a power pole.

Trucks are asked to avoid the Macquarie Rd intersection between settlement Rd and Bark Rd due to the low hanging power lines.

At this stage, no injuries have been reported.

Drink driver caught speeding with four children in car

Tuesday, March 28: A Tasmanian learner driver caught speeding at 133km/h while three times the legal alcohol limit had four children in his car.

The 35-year-old Bridgewater man was clocked driving at 133km/h in a 100km/h zone along the Brooker Highway at Claremont at about 8.15pm on Monday.

Checks revealed the man was a suspended learner driver, who was unaccompanied by a licenced driver, was driving with a blood-alcohol level of .154 – three times the legal limit.

Four children were also in the car at the time of his intercept.

The man was charged with multiple traffic offences.

His licence was immediately suspended for two years.

Inspector Jim Semmens said the “poor driver behaviour” could have easily ended in tragedy.

“Our message is simple, don’t speed, don’t drink and drive, wear your seatbelt, and don’t drive tired or distracted,” Inspector Semmens said.
