UPDATE – 12:30PM:

A CLAREMONT man remains in custody after allegedly trafficking $5.5 million worth of drugs into Hobart on Monday night.

Jye Baldwin, 32, briefly faced the Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday after he was allegedly nabbed by a drug detector sniffer dog at Hobart International Airport.

Mr Baldwin has not yet entered a plea to the charge of trafficking in a controlled substance, and did not make an application for bail when he appeared before Magistrate Jackie Hartnett.

Tasmania Police previously said in a statement that Mr Baldwin had arrived on a flight from Sydney, with his luggage allegedly containing 2kg of cocaine and 3.5kg of methylamphetamine.

Police said the alleged haul had a street value of about $5.5 million.

Mr Baldwin was remanded in custody and will return to court on April 20.

INITIAL:

A stash of drugs worth $5.5 million has been sniffed out by a drug detector dog screening passengers at Hobart Airport overnight.

About 8pm Monday, Tasmania Police and Australian Federal Police were conducting drug screening of arriving passengers at Hobart International Airport.

“A 32-year-old Claremont man, who had recently arrived on a flight from Sydney, was indicated by a drug detector dog to be in possession of a controlled drug,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

“A subsequent search of the man’s luggage located 2 kilograms of cocaine and 3.5 kilograms of methylamphetamine.

“The man was arrested and conveyed to the Hobart Police Station where he was interviewed, charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and detained to attend court on the 28th of March 2023.”

The drugs have an estimated street value of $5.5 million

The latest seizure comes just a fortnight after another significant Hobart Airport bust, where a police drug detection dog helped uncover $112,000 worth of methamphetamine on a male passenger trying to get through Hobart Airport security.

Tasmania Police charged a 30-year-old man with trafficking and other drug offences following the interception at Hobart Airport on March 10.
