The Veronicas put on high energy performance of fan favourites

HUNDREDS of punters from 18 to 74-years-old ventured out last night to soak up the sounds and sights from one of the most famous acts to visit Tassie since the pandemic.

Tickets were snapped up for 1000 locals to see iconic pop singer-songwriter twins The Veronicas belt out their ARIA award-winning and MTV award-nominated hits including In My Blood, Untouched and 4ever beside the River Derwent at the Hobart Regatta Grounds.

The show was a major event as part of Vandemonian Touring’s series of music shows reigniting the nearly extinguished local music industry, featuring the kooky Confidence Man, multi-instrumentalist Jamaican-Australian rapper and singer JayCee and Tassie jazz-soul outfit Kudo Joy as support acts for the evening.

The Mercury caught up with The Veronicas twins Lisa and Jess Origliasso before the show.

“It’s an amazing feeling being back at a show with people [after COVID-19], but also it’s our first time here in Tasmania so it’s double the usual energy for us and it feels really good,” Jess said.

“Every show is about connecting with the audience, people having the best time, dancing, singing along and having fun – especially after the year we’ve had.”

Lisa said the night was a “celebration” to mark the end of a “tough year”.

“We’re going into the next year with this beautiful energy, good spirits and positive vibes, and we just want everyone to have a really fun time tonight.”

Jess said 2021 would herald a new album from the talented pair and “hopefully some touring as well.”

April Mohr, 18, made the trip down from Launceston with a group of friends especially for the gig having been a fan of The Veronicas since she was just five years old.

“I’m just really excited and happy that live music is back in Tasmania – we’re very lucky these sorts of events can go ahead,” she said.

“The last gig I went to was Party in Paddock in February so it’s been a while.”

Vandemonian Touring will ring in 2021 New Year’s Evewith a sold out Hobart show from Brisbane upbeat indie-rockers The Jungle Giants among a string of planned New Year events.
