CONSTRUCTION is well underway at Mona on a major new building, as the museum gears up for a big summer.

Titled The House of Kiefer, the building will link with existing parts of the museum via new tunnels.

Hoarding around the site says “David’s building something new. We’ve given up trying to stop him”.

A spokeswoman for the museum declined to provide any further details about the building’s specific purpose and scheduled opened date.

The architectural designs were dated February 2020, around one month before the museum closed amid the Covid pandemic.

A development application lodged with Glenorchy City Council in late 2020 showed the building designed by Melbourne-based Fender Katsalidis Architects located near Ryoji Ikeda’s light installation Spectra.

It will be connected to other parts of the museum via two new tunnels.

The existing museum already houses a piece by German artist Anselm Kiefer.

The building is the third major extension for the site following the $27m Siloam extension in 2019 and the $32m Pharos extension in 2017.

Mona is currently open Friday to Monday, but from December 26 will extend opening hours to Thursdays.

The museum is hoping to draw crowds next weekend when it hosts a two-day art and music extravaganza.

The event over December 17 and 18 will celebrate the opening of the Oceans of Air exhibition with live music on the lawns.
