FOUR Tasmanian teachers had their registration immediately suspended and two had their registration cancelled as a result of criminal convictions or other issues which “may pose a risk of harm to a student” last year, it has been revealed.

The Teachers Registration Board Tasmania annual report 2019 was published this week.

It showed there were four people who had their registration immediately suspended, which occurs when the board “believes on reasonable grounds that a registered teacher may pose a risk of harm to a student.”

Of the four matters, one suspension was due to a charge being laid by Tasmania Police, another resulted from an investigation by police, another resulted from a person “engaging in behaviour that posed a risk of harm to students” and the fourth was due to a medical issue.

The report also showed 39 teachers had matters of concern in relation to their good character and fitness to teach.

Of these, three matters were ongoing, nine had been withdrawn, 25 people had their registration granted, one had theirs granted with conditions and one person was formally refused registration.

During 2019, the board received conviction notices from Tasmania Police in relation to 38 teachers of which 22 were minor matters and “no formal action was warranted”.

Six were issued with a formal caution, one also had a condition added to their registration and two people had their registration cancelled as a result of the convictions.

The board was also made aware of eight circumstances involving unregistered teachers.

Four related to individuals teaching without registration while the remaining four related to employers engaging unregistered people to teach.

During the year, complaints were received against 22 people, with investigations into 15 of those still ongoing into 2020.

Five complaints were dismissed while two were withdrawn.

The board monitored 18 teachers during 2019 whose registration had been subject to conditions, with 14 not satisfying their conditions.

Registrar Lee Rayner acknowledged the “tireless” work of the board in ensuring professionalism among teachers in the state.

“The staff continue to deliver the services required with the primary focus on the welfare and best interests of the students of Tasmania,” she wrote.
