Tasmania’s leading NAPLAN schools revealed in 2024 My School data from ACARA

Strong performing Tasmanian schools in NAPLAN testing have been revealed in newly published data, which highlights the achievers and the challenges facing the education system.

A surprising private school has topped the charts for Tasmanian secondary schools after My School released the full, updated scores for 2024.

Surging up from previous low NAPLAN results, OneSchool Global at Claremont, finished top of the pack.

The independent school, with roots in the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, has 26 students total across primary and secondary school at it’s Claremont campus, which was founded in 1994.

Preliminary findings based on performance of the previous year found nine out of ten top performing secondary schools all being outside the state education system, which remained the same following the full release, however with some different schools.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority’s (ACARA) My School data was updated on Wednesday, providing a detailed breakdown of the full NAPLAN results for 2024.

Year 9 OneSchool Global dominated across all indicators _ reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

Fahan students, who ranked second overall, were the next best in reading and writing.

Students at the Friends’ School in North Hobart achieved second numeracy results and overall finished third at the secondary level.

Government schools featured more prominently in the top NAPLAN results for primary schools, with Princes Street Primary School, Mount Stuart Primary School, South Hobart Primary School, and Albuera Street Primary School ranking in second, third, seventh and tenth, respectively.

Princes Street students were the grammar and punctuation stars, achieving the highest results in that field out of all primary schools.

At the secondary level, however, the only government school to feature in the top 10 was Flinders Island District High School, which posted the ninth best results.

The list of results is dominated by schools in the Greater Hobart area, highlighting a gap in socio-educational advantage.

All top 10 best performers for primary schools were Southern-based, while Flinders Island District at ninth and Scotch Oakburn College at 10th represented the North-West and North respectively at secondary level.

The best performing primary schools in the northern regions were Scotch Oakburn College and Stanley Primary School at 17th and 18th respectively.

ACARA CEO Stephen Gniel said the data was “so valuable for Australian parents and carers, as well as the broader community” but cautioned people against using the results to pit schools against each other.

“We need to know how our schools are doing, but it is also important that this information is presented in a way that considers the individual circumstances of a school, especially its level of socio-educational advantage, which our reporting takes into account,” he said.

Education Minister Jo Palmer said while there had been some “static” results seen in the My School data for Tasmania, there were also schools that were “turning this around”.

“We want to encourage our schools to stay on the journey – we know there’s more work to do but we absolutely know we are on the right trajectory,” she said.
