Tasmania decides Australia’s best tap water

The most crisp, refreshing, thirst-quenching tap water in Australia was decided by a panel of Tasmanian water-drinkers in a blind taste test on Thursday.

The Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia Competition was held at the Risdon Brook Dam, where organisers assembled bottles of the finest tap water from all the states of Australia.

One of the taste testers was Tassie cricket legend George Bailey, whose favourite water comes from his bathroom sink.

As a cricketing superstar Mr Bailey has sampled tap water from around the world, but says nothing beats a glass of Aussie H20.

“The one thing we are very lucky to be able to do in Australia is drink water straight from the tap, and it’s something not to be taken for granted,” Mr Bailey said.

“We’ve travelled a lot of countries around the world where we’re constantly having bottled water and food and water and having to boil water in places.”

Water enthusiast Ursula Taylor, who is also the Derwent Estuary Program CEO, said she thought all the state’s tap water candidates were delicious.

Ms Taylor said had a heightened appreciation for all the hard work that went on behind the scenes to keep Tasmania’s water clean, pure, and quenching.

“It’s quite a process to take it from our rivers, treatment systems, then piping it through our cities,” she said.

“We have the privilege of being able to turn on the water we use to drink, bathe, shower, wash, without having to think about it.”

The water was judged by criteria such as clarity, odour, taste, and “mouthfeel”, with the points tallied up before a verdict was reached.

The best tap water in Australia was deemed to be that of Richmond Valley Council from NSW.

Tasmania’s candidate came from Rocky Creek in the Huon Valley, which was rated the second worst tap water among its competitors.

In 2020 Tasmania’s tap water was rated number one, hailing from the Rossarden Water Treatment Plant in the state’s Northern Midlands.
