TASMANIA VOTES: Your ultimate guide to local government elections

Feeling confused about local government elections? Here’s our ultimate guide to Tasmania’s compulsory council elections with frequently asked questions + full list of candidates.

Clarence City Council mayor Doug Chipman will not recontest

Check out your candidates below! (Pro-tip: hit CTRL+F and search for your council to skip to your candidates)

In a nutshell

In a little over a month, Tasmanians will know the new makeup of all 29 councils, voting in community representatives for the next four year.

With the close of nominations on September 19, we learned the race is a competitive one; there are 505 candidates running across the state and 263 councillor positions to fill.

Of those candidates, 97 decided to also throw their name in the ring for mayor and 136 are running for deputy mayor.

Hobart City had the highest number of candidates for council (44) and the highest number of mayoral nominations (8).

For the first time voting in the local government elections is compulsory, meaning those on the state electoral roll who fail to vote could be slapped with a fine.

Eight candidates who nominated for King Island Council were elected unopposed after the council did not recieve enough nominations to fill nine councillor positions.

The nomination period was extended and four more candidates put their hand up to run for the last seat.

The Central Highlands, Kentish, Latrobe and Southern Midlands councils each only had one nomination for mayor, but the candidates must be elected as a councillor before they can accept a position as mayor.

If the lone candidates aren’t elected as a councillor, a by-election will be held to fill the position.

Voting will be conducted via postal ballot which will be sent out from October 3 and polls will close on October 25.

Clearing up confusion

Who is eligible to vote?

Anyone who is on the state electoral roll is automatically on the local government roll for the municipality of their enrolled address. Registration for the electoral roll closed on September 8, so it is now too late to register to vote in this upcoming election.

Can I vote twice if I have properties in multiple local government areas?

Some people can vote twice if they have properties in different municipal areas, but they can only vote once per council. For example, if you live in Hobart City but own a property in Clarence you can vote in both Hobart City and Clarence elections. However, if you live in and own another property in Hobart City you can only vote once in the Hobart City election. To apply for these special circumstances, voters needed to write to the council’s general manager to be added to the “general manager’s roll”. Registration for the general manager’s roll has now closed. It is not compulsory for those on the general manager’s role to vote.

Can I vote on behalf of a corporation?

You can also vote if you are the nominated representative of a corporate body. To apply for these special circumstances, voters needed to write to the council’s general manager to be added to the “general manager’s roll”. Registration for the general manager’s roll has now closed. It is not compulsory for those on the general manager’s role to vote.

What if I’m not an Australian Citizen?

If you’re not am Australian citizen but you live in a Tasmanian municipality, you could have applied to be added to the general manager’s roll, but registration for this has now closed.

Can votes be dropped off in person?

Yes! The TEC says postal ballots are preferred but those worried their vote might not be received in time can drop off their vote at their council office. Each council will have a sealed ballot box.

What if I’m away during the voting period?

If you won’t be at home to receive your ballot pack, you can contact the TEC to request the ballot pack be mailed out to an alternative address. This can be done any time until October 21.

Can I vote early if I’m going to be away?

In response to this question, a TEC spokesman said electors who are going away should contact the TEC.
