Man dead after single-vehicle crash
Thursday April 11, 5.30pm: A man has died after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree at St Marys in the state’s North-East this afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the scene on Esk Main Road soon after 1.30pm after reports the vehicle had left the road and struck the tree.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.
Tasmania Police said a report would be prepared for the Coroner.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” Tasmania Police said in a statement.
Car falls into rivulet after crash
Thursday April 11, 4.30pm: Risdon Road at New Town has been closed between the Brooker Highway and Bay Rd after a vehicle fell at least 2m into the New Town Rivulet following a crash earlier in the day.
Emergency crews attended the scene and a ladder was used to access the SUV and its two passengers in a St John Ambulance vehicle.
The two people were taken to hospital but St John Ambulance Tasmania reported no serious injuries in a social media post.
“Thanks to those expressing concern. We're relieved to say no one was seriously injured,” the post read.
“Our heartfelt thanks to the first responders for their help. Sometimes even the helpers need a helping hand!”
A water mains was damaged in the crash with water spouting several metres into the air.
Police urged motorists to avoid the area while the scene is cleared.
Teenage P-plater caught driving 152km/h on North-West highway
1.40pm: An unmarked police vehicle reportedly caught a Devonport P-plater driving 152 km/h on the Bass Highway at Penguin.
The 17-year-old who held a P1 licence has been disqualified from driving for four months, police say.
She was also fined $1,121, six demerit points and had her vehicle clamped for 28 days after the incident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
Police fire warning to repeat offenders after two charged
April 10, 8.45am: Two people in Northern Tasmania have been charged.
A 17-year-old from Invermay is believed to have committed a series of burglaries at newsagents in Invermay and Kings Meadows on Monday morning.
Police officers say they found a quantity of allegedly stolen cigarettes and cash in a search of the teenager.
Officers also allege that a stolen car was used in the burglaries.
In a separate incident, a 22-year-old Ravenswood man was charged with multiple offences ranging from violence against police to road safety offences.
Police say a co-ordinated arrest unfolded after an off-duty officer saw the man in Launceston on Tuesday morning.
Officers believe the man is responsible for the theft of several motor vehicles and high-risk driving behaviours in the Launceston area since the start of April.
He is set to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
Detective Acting Inspector Rob King said: “Police remain committed to targeting people who commit crimes in our community, especially those who are repeat offenders.”
Man charged with stealing spree
April 9, 3.15pm: A 45-year-old Devonport man has been charged by police over a spate of stealing matters in recent weeks.
Police allege the man stole approximately $13,000 worth of good from various businesses over the past few weeks.
Officers also accused him of providing false details to investigators.
The man is scheduled to appear before the Devonport Magistrates Court at 2.15pm on Tuesday on multiple charges.
Senior Sergeant James Scicluna said: “Information from the public plays an important part in police investigations and I would like to thank the people who came forward and provided information which assisted in the arrest of this man.”
He said the investigation was ongoing to recover further stolen property, including a child’s new mountain bike.
Teenager accused of carrying two knives and stolen property
3.20pm: Police have charged a 14-year-old boy from East Devonport after an incident outside a Devonport business earlier this morning.
The teenager is facing a number of charges including possessing a dangerous article after police allege a search found two knives and stolen property.
Police say they responded to reports the 14-year-old was behaving in a disorderly manner on William St about 11am.
He was bailed to appear at the Devonport Youth Justice Court at a later date.
Police Sergeant stood down after assault with indecent intent charge
April 9, 2.20pm: A police Sergeant has been accused of committing assault with indecent intent while off duty in Launceston in July 2023.
The 52-year-old man who is a Sergeant from the Northern District has been stood down and faces one charge, police say.
He is expected to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on May 20.
Police were unable to provide further comment, siting it was not appropriate now the matter is before the court.
Charges laid over allegations baseball bat used to assault man
April 9, 9.30am: A 20-year-old man and a teenager from Queenstown have been charged over an assault in Queenstown that police allege involved a baseball bat.
Police say the incident, which occurred on early Monday morning, hospitalised a 36-year-old Queenstown man. He was in hospital in a stable condition being treated for serious head injuries, police said on Monday evening.
Officers allege a baseball bat was used to assault the man.
Senior Constable Stephen Barrow from Queenstown Uniform said the incident was isolated between people who were known to each other.
“Two people have been charged and will appear in the Queenstown Magistrates Court and Youth Justice Division at a later date,” Senior Constable Barrow said.
Police ramp up investigations into serious motorcycle crash
4pm: Investigations are ongoing into a serious motorcycle crash on the Bass Hwy at Heybridge in the state’s North-West on Sunday.
A 74-year-old Ulverstone man has been flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital after suffering serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Police said emergency services responded to the scene about 2.45pm yesterday after reports the motorcycle had lost control and crashed.
They said initial investigations indicate that drugs, alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.
Police said they want to speak with anyone who witnessed the motorcycle in the area around the time of the crash.
Person injured after car strikes a pole in Launceston
1.26pm: The crash has been cleared.
One person has been taken to the Launceston General Hospital for medical treatment.
12.55pm: Police are responding to reports a car struck a pole at the intersection of Howick and Wellington Sts at South Launceston.
Motorists have been asked to avoid the area until the scene is cleared.
Police say one person is receiving medical treatment at the scene.
Police’s warning after young man caught three times over the limit
April 8, 12.30pm: Police have charged five people with drink driving in Hobart on Friday night, including a young man who reportedly almost blew three times over the legal limit.
It was part of random breath testing operations.
Police Inspector Kathy Bennett said the 20-year-old man from Old Beach who blew a reading of 0.131 – almost three times the legal limit – was one of several motorists caught drinking between 11pm and 1.30am on Friday night.
“A 32-year-old man from Tranmere, a 25-year-old woman from Lindisfarne, a 52-year-old man from Howrah and a 53-year-old man from Warrane were also caught well over the limit, with readings ranging from 0.074 to 0.118,” she said.
“It’s extremely frustrating for police when people continue to take these risks, we want everyone to get home safe.”
“If you’re having a drink, plan another way home – it’s simply not worth it.”
Emergency services rush to head-on collision near raspberry farm
3.33pm: Emergency services are being kept busy this afternoon after two serious crashes.
In the state’s South, police are responding to a report of a head-on crash between two vehicles near the raspberry farm on the Tasman Hwy, Orielton.
Officers report people are trapped but injuries so far remain unknown.
Meanwhile in the North-West, a serious crash has occurred involving a motorcycle on the Bass Hwy, Heybridge.
There are reports the rider is seriously injured.
Man tragically dies while diving at White Beach
12.45pm: Police have confirmed a 38-year-old Oyster Cove man has died after diving at White Beach in the state’s South this morning.
Police and emergency services responded to reports a diver had been recovered from the water just before 9.40am.
Officers say despite CPR attempts, the man died at the scene.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Emergency services rush to serious crash in state’s South
April 7, 11.50am: Emergency services are treating a single vehicle crash at Bridgewater as serious.
The incident occurred on Gunn St and has closed a section of the road between Chalmers Link and Finlay St.
Police officers report injuries are not known at this stage.
