Local farming family bringing whisky, gin and family-friendly hospitality back to Bothwell
After years of watching the iconic Nant Estate Distillery sit dormant, a local farming family has breathed new life into the historic flour mill ahead of its grand opening as Clyde Mill

After watching over the fence with interest for many years John Ramsay and his family are revitalising the former Nant Estate Distillery, just in time for Tas Whiskey Week.
Mr Ramsay and his wife Annie recently purchased the former Bothwell Nant Distillery, located in the original flour mill on the Nant Estate at Bothwell, and are bringing it back to life as Clyde Mill.
The Nant Distillery closed down almost a decade ago and Mr Ramsay hopes to bring back the community spirit it brought to the town.
“It was just a nice venue, it employed people, people talked about it, people came up for it and I hope we can replicate that,” Mr Ramsay said.
He said he and his wife originally bought the property for its grazing benefits and stunning historic homestead but were excited for the career shift to use the distillery and cafe included in the property.
“This is a place where families can relax and enjoy quality spirits, food, and games on the lawn,” Mr Ramsay said.
“Our goal is to create a welcoming environment for all ages.”
Mr Ramsay said he was not the biggest whisky drinker but is starting to take a liking to the spirit and has created a delicious gin as his first release.
He said Clyde Mill is focused on providing a family focused environment that caters to everyone.
Clyde Mill is opening its doors exclusively for Tasmanian Whiskey Week from August 2-8 before participating in the Tasmanian Spirit Showcase on August 9, 2025 at PW1 in Hobart.
Guests can sample new releases, including exclusive cask strength whiskies crafted from Tawny, Apera and Bourbon casks that were distilled onsite in 2019 -2021.
The venue will officially open in mid-September.
