Southern Cross Care has acquired Bupa Aged Care in South Hobart

A Hobart aged care home is set to be closed and another subject to a takeover by a Tasmanian provider.

The future of aged care in Australia

ONE Hobart aged care facility will be closed and another taken off the hands of a private health fund as part of a business reshuffle by a Tasmanian not-for-profit provider.

Southern Cross Care will close the Mary’s Grange Aged Care home in Taroona, after acquiring Bupa’s 119-bed facility in South Hobart.

Mary’s Grange currently houses 74 residents.

Southern Cross Care Tasmania CEO Robyn Boyd said Mary’s Grange was being closed as part of a review of operations associated with the Bupa acquisition.

Mrs Boyd said residents would be able to move to a home of their choice, including South Hobart.

“We are starting work on this process and we have informed the Department of Health and Human Services of our intentions and are working through the steps,” she said.

“One of the most important aspects of delivering high quality, individually tailored care is the environment it is delivered in. Mary’s Grange is coming to the end of its life as an aged care facility.”

The South Hobart home takeover will take effect from December 1.

“We are pleased to be in a position to do this and secure the home for the residents, as well as Tasmanian jobs under Tasmanian ownership,” Mrs Boyd said.

Southern Cross Care says it will be business at usual at the South Hobart home following the takeover, with all staff to be retained.
